Hacking Do new DS Lites have yellowish tints?

I guess the tints are something I'd have to live with, and according to you guys it's not really noticeable.
I wasn't going to get white anyway, I will get either Black, Enamel Navy, Silver. Maybe Crimson, but I don't think it looks good :/
I'm probably going to either order it from Play-Asia, Renchi, or YesAsia. Any experience with any of them?

Renchi is good IMO. Always got my order right. Shipping took 7 days exactly (but I always use the express ship, as I think the small increase in price over the regular ship is worh it.)

I just got a new crimson DS today, so if any tint problems occer, I'll let ya know. Though my DS black didn't have any of the problems listed, it did eventually have the touch screen become effed up, and it acted as if I taped farther to the side than I actually did. I couldn't recalibrate it either.

One funny urban legend I heard about the DS lite is that is you turn it on before you fully charge it the first time, your screen will be more likely to have yellow tints. I accedently turned it on before it fully charged, but I don't care since I know it's just a myth. I once had a bookmark to a funny site about superstitions about video game stuff, but my bookmarks all got erased at one point for some reason, and I've never found that site since.

As one could have guessed, a lot of them were about the Virtual Boy, and how it made your eyes bleed. Poor Virtual Boy got so much bad press.

Well it's not that bad since I never noticed it before. As it was said, you can only see it on all white screens...


About that cracked hinge stuff, how does it happen?!! You're all saying you are really being careful with your NDSL, but then how does the hinge crack? Just one day you open it and *crack*?

Play it at the normal unfolded position, and dont over-unfold it. Also my first DS Lite didn't have a yellow screen. DS Lite systems beginning with UG4 dont have yellowish screens AFAIK.

Also a stuck pixel is worse than a yellow screen IMO, because the yellow screen is completely unnoticeable unless youre on a pure white screen.

I has a UG4 and it has a broken hinge, but no yellow tints.

Yellowish tint is due to the added touch screen layer (if you remove it the two screens are identical); some DSes have a better layer with less yellowish tint... but I never saw one without it.

The one on the right is better, but it also has a faint tint.

There is no explanation in top screens having a yellowish tint, too. This is just plain and simple BS-ing......

Cracked hinges aren't always from too much stress. I had a white DSL, and the hinge cracked over time. I'm 28, and very careful with all my stuff. In fact, it was always in a case when not in use, and was never dropped or anything. Either way, Nintendo replaced it for free.

Listen i had my white ds for about 6 months now and it is my second one. If you do not fold the top screen all the way back as in leave the screen at its first click it will never have a hinge crack.

1) the yellowish tint is only visible with two white screens (brain training etc...), and it does not bother me when playing games.
In most games, with colourful screens, you won't notice the yellowish tint.

2) cracked hinges will happen if you unfold it too much, if treated properly and carefully it will not happen to your ds lite.

3) never seen a dead pixel on our ds lites (3 ds lites in the house) or other ds lites (from friends).

4) from the ds lites that I have (black, white and golden zelda ds lite), fingerprints and scratches are best seen on the black version.

I've had 2 DS lites, one with a yellow tint, and one with a non-yellow tint and dead pixels. 2 DS Phats with the same thing.

i got a new blu/black ds lite and the screens were perfect unlike the red one i got at xmas for my kid.

alas, i returned it to the store because i still like the red better. the blue one looks purple most of the time and there is nothing i hate more than purple. i'm hoping the new shipment of reds have good screens.

My 3rd DS Lite will be the silver one. My current crimson/black Lite has got yellowish tint (ts). I hope new will be perfect.

2) Only on white DS Lites, rumor/fact is that white a.k.a POLAR WHITE DS's have bad build quality.
3) Dead pixels happen randomly.
4) Yes the Blaack DS does, Black, or the new Blue+Black(which would be hard to find)

Yes to all. Cracked hinges are usually from the owner opening their DS too aggressively.

sorry guys, but not true. first off, I'm not some little kid that doesn't know how to take care of electronics and I've had 2 ds lite's crack in the exact same spot from "gently" opening or shutting my system.

to be honest, I believe that the problem is centers around the hinge mechanism used. in the original ds system, 2 hinges were used which distributed an equal amount of stress when opening and closing the system. the newer ds lites, changed how the upper lcd ribbon cable was threaded through to the motherboard and in doing so, nintendo eliminated one of the hinge mechanisms. this provides more stress to the small ring of plastic surrounding the hinge piece, directly left of the power/wi fi LED indicators. however, this doesn't appear to happen as much on the newer systems (see my answer to question 2 below).

as to the rest of the original questions:
1) do most new DS Lites have yellowish tints? Does it depend on color?
I believe that nintendo's quality control has finally gotten an upper hand on their two suppliers (samsung and sharp I believe) and have eliminated this issue. I haven't seen it on any of the newer systems since the beginning of this year.

2) do cracked hinges happen a lot on new DS Lite units?
I believe that this problem still exists, however the frequency is a lot lower. nintendo appears to have changed the amount of tension in the hinge mechanism, thereby reducing the amount of torque related stress on the thin plastic ring that holds the hinge piece in place.

3) do dead pixels happen a lot on new DS Lite units?
yes, but the issues are few and far between. in addition, nintendo (unlike sony) and their retail partners (your mileage may vary) seems to be pretty good in offering an exchange for systems with dead and/or stuck pixels.

4) does black DS Lite smudge really badly? If so, what color would you recommend?
unfortunately, yes. it's like the ps3. it looks beautiful when it's first taken out of the package, but shortly afterward becomes a magnet for dust, micro scratches and oily fingerprints. personally, I prefer the matte black finish on both the cobalt/black and crimson/black systems.

I had a Pink DSL but the hinge cracked (and I'm super cautious with my stuff)

I exchange it for a Gold Zelda one and now I'm stuck with a green stuck pixel in the top screeen.

I wanted to exchange it again but I can't find Gold DS anywhere so I'll keep it!
