I got mine about two years ago and have the most up to date firmware for it. Do 8gb micro sd cards work with it? My current 2gb one works fine. Also if they do, does it matter what brand I get or is that just some myth?

No, because 8 GB micro SD cards are SDHC which the simply is not compatible with. You will have to look for another flashcart. And certain speeds do matter depending on the flash carts... Usually class 6 but I don't think 8 GB ones have that speed yet.

whats regarded as the best flashcart for ds?
Cyclo DS (55 bucks), Acekard 2 (23 bucks), Acekard RPG (80 bucks), SCDS1 SDHC (DON'T READ THE OLD REVIEW OF IT ON GBATEMP. THERE IS A NEW ONE. Also, 28 bucks,)

Acekard RPG>CycloDS = SCDS1 SDHC > Acekard 2.

And all these support micro sd cards that are over 2 gigs. And if you want the cheapest of all, then the DSTT. It's very fast, and really cheap. Made for gaming and homebrew only though.

R4, M3 simply, EZFlash V, doesn't support micro sd cards that are over 2 gigs.

Where does M3 Real/Sakura come into that scale? I'd assume somewhere high with all the speed/functionality improvements...

It probably doesn't count, as the official (English) release really doesn't exist yet, nor does the review.

EZ Flash V has gotten sdhc-support through hardware update and is now called EZ Flash V Plus.

What if I just want to play games on it and not care about music or video files whats the best method? The M3 DS Simply is pretty good for this and I havent had any issues with it other than updating sometimes to be able to play a game. Saving save states is fine with it too. Should I just stick to this? Will 4gb micro sd cards work with it?

4GB=SDHC
so it won't work.

if you don't want to be bothered with media etc, and only play games, the itouch might be something for you.
it's cheap, but all it does is launch NDS files through 3 different screens.
