I'm working on a .PAK text editor so you guys can easily modify the .PAK files and test your translations directly although you'll need to use my updated fonts.pak file (which you can't modify with this new tool) I'm testing it now to make sure its all working if all goes well i'll post it in a few hours. (Unfortunately I haven't had time to go through the current dumps and get them working with my previous tools but its just a copy/paste job using this new tool

I haven't had the time to play with the text files lately because of school work, lack of sleep, yadayadayada, and I've finally gotten my own 3DS that I've hardly touched >_<

I'll be getting back into it either this weekend or the beginning of next week, though.
 
yo! i'm a fan of digimon and other JRPGS and have been very thankful to people who works on this kinds of projects

well i've been trying to apply translation direclty with the pak using hex...
i know how to find texts and change it...
but when i change the values using standard encoding the game displays symbols
and when i use the encoding used by the game it works....

but there are problems such as:
-the space provided for a text is limited (i think this is because of the games font encoding/display used e.g. ???? = Agumon / Jap word 4letters English has 6)
-names gets joined e.g. in the digi"dex" names are displayed AgumonBe...Betamon...KoromonToko...Tokomon

and want to help in one way or another XD

and what you did with the font pak was awesome..

I still dont know how you edited the default font pak
but it works really great...

I edited it manually (A very slow and painful process....)
 
well normatt i'll be translating some of the paks

is the text regarding the in game menu graphically embedded (tiles)
or is it all text?

I only modified one of the fonts, the others probably need modified aswell i'll take a look at doing at at some stage but as i previously stated its a long and tedious process.

EDIT: Can you post your updated PAK files so i can test out the modified fonts without having to modify the texts myself.

Thanks for the info. I was trying to get these other .PAK files to work and didn't realize they weren't the original MESPAKxx.PAK files I had extracted before lol
But it's not a big problem for me... Hopefully tomorrow I can get back to "translating" what I'm capable of doing, if it's even needed anymore.

@normatt: and yeah i saw your font pak...that was a very tedious process changing the jap tiles into the alphabet letter...

What exactly is the SUBQUEST.PAK file also?

i haven't looked at the SCRIPT_DATA_ROM.PAK...so i dont know
but as far as i know some of it is in mespak03 because when i change it the dialouge changes just like in my screenshot
i think SUBQUEST.PAK contains the game's sidequests...

edit: i think everything is in the MSG folder...but you wont know until youve translated some of it....
 
I'm going to go ahead and say that I have no experience hacking ROMs aside from moving around files to undub games (rocket science, I know). However, I do have a fairly workable knowledge of Japanese (enough to play this game with zero problems) and while I've already long stopped playing it (beat the story and couldn't be assed to do all the side quests), I have friends who will never get to it due to the language barrier.

If anyone wants to hit me up on AIM or MSN about helping with the translation, I'll be more than happy to, assuming I'm not working on any doujin translation projects at the time.

Just let me know if you guys need any help with this.
 
yo! lately i've been skimming and comparing the different mespak's and the game itself and have found out some of the things they contain:

mespak00 contains:
-digimonlist, digegg list, items(equipments/far equipments), digiattacks

mespak01 contains:
-some npc dialogue, locations, game dialogues(enter your name, are you a boy/girl, yes/no etc.)
-title screen menu(new game, continue etc.),
-game menu(farmname, friend code, name, buy item, digi convert, item, sell item, bit, experience etc.),
-item descriptions

mespak02 contains:
-descriptions of digimons (314) edit: i think this is in order and this site has a translation of the digimons (if not all) Digimon Wikia
-some digiegg names (53)

mespak03 contains:
-game script(story)

mespak04 contains:
-digimon attack descriptions(i think i saw some)
-digiplates
-digivolution requirements (required level to digivolve etc)
-dna digivolution requirements
-item descriptions

mespak05 contains:
-i think this is relevant to the game srcipt(story)

i just skimmed the paks and tried to translate some of them...
these are the things that i have found...
 
That sounds about right from what I remember. The majority of MESPAK00 is understandably translated. The only things I'm 100% on are the Digimon names, Trees, and DigiEggs. Everything is either a direct translation [and not a dub] name or not translated at all (which I think I said before and with the exception of a few that i might had found dub names for).
 
K, i've been busy for a while, but I think i'll take a look at #3 with normatt's tool. And also, we should definitely invite prototype_u to help, since he's probably the best out of us.
 
Good luck with this and I hope this gets done soon. I take it no other patch exists yet?

Hey it's Normatt! He made DesmuME and I think he worked on an English patch for KDRO along with RysCox once upon a time.
