ROM Hack Different region rom.

So, I have a Japanese Omega ruby rom, I know that I can change the language but what about multiplayer and other things? Are there any downsides?

P.S: Can anyone please confirm if Gateway 3.2 is safe to update the emunand to the latest firmware?

No downsides, and you can update to 9.7 only if you are using a Old 3DS or 2DS (N3DS users have to wait).
