Diddy Kong Racing Rom not working?

Well this was the most relevant place I could see asking this question.

So I'm trying to emulate Diddy Kong Racing on the latest version of Project 64 which is 1.7. But when I try to boot up the game it says.... Failed to Open Mempak.

But it goes deeper then that. I tried to run this game on the previous version and when I turn around instead of going in the first world the rom either freezes on me or the entire game crashes or gets all fucked up.

I'm only using one cheat code aside from the defaults as well as the in game cheats you can use and that's a cheat for all characters.

So I really want to play this game so does anyone have any insight what's wrong with my rom or how to fix it?
