I updated my 3ds yesterday losing access to homemenuhax, It's not that big of a miss for me since I don't use HANS or any other app, but I did use regionfive (or however is called) so I'm curious on that, is there any way to play region-locked games in an alternative method? (excuse my noobness, lol).

    regionfive is HANS ;)
You can use smashhax (it works with the eShop demo too), it's not great but it's the only free entry point on the newest FW. Edit: Only works if you have a n3DS.

The Smash update can be uninstalled.

Theoretically it did, in practice it never did, plus the vulnerability was fixed in an update to the demo.

I wasn't aware of the demo being patched. I guess that won't work then, unless he already had an older version downloaded.
If he has the retail version (without the latest update) and a n3DS, smashhax works fine and is actually easy to get working with the tool in this thread: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-using-smashhax-with-linux.397194/
It's just a hassle having to use a live CD to boot HBL. Other than that, it works fine.

Even before they patched the demo, it wasn't really working because the payloadurl option seemed to have a caching issue they couldn't get rid of.
yellows8 apparently got it to work on his own dev environment by adding breakpoints and all but that's not exactly something everyone would be able to do.
