Well, he said he is annoyed by the GC controller and those small discs.
Bothered by the small discs my ass.
Quite frankly I also don't know how those small discs can be bothersome. I mean they may be small, but they have cases in the exact same size as Wii cases. A GC controller though can be annoying if one has big hands or just don't like the ergonomy of the controller (although for me gc controllers are much better than CC/CCP).

The one question I have is will I be able to rip an original GC game to my HDD, then bring my HDD to a friend's house and play the GC rip using his Wii? Or would the game need to be re-ripped every time I want to load it on a different Wii?

Thx!

My guess would be that Devolution will ask you to insert an original disc and dump it to SD/USB. It also signs the dump with console specific things to prevent those ISOs from being shared between Wiis. It's kinda like VC games. Of course everything is an assumption of mine.

Does anyone realize how completely absurd that sounds?
The 8cm discs are annoying because they're too small to keep in regular DVD binders - they either fall out or end up too deep in the plastic pockets to reach. I don't see what's so absurd about it.

Can newer wiis read a orginal gamecube disc? I was under the impression that they couldn't, I have a old one myself so never tryied it.

No. They wont even take the disc in, which I believe is another reason why he started this project, but I could be wrong on all accounts.
WHY: To do what the "official" method doesn't. I hate GC controllers and the crappy little discs. And if you bought a new model wii you can't play NGC games at all.

Contradiction?

fair enough.

Now I thought of another Q... is this likely to be able to run off of neek? I know it can be run directly from an exploit, but it would be sweet if it also worked via neek so you don't need to repeat exploits on virgin wii's in order to switch between loading Wii and GC backups. This is purely speculation, but it might also be a good middle ground in terms of sharing of backups... I imagine that if rips are encrypted using per console device.cert, then I should be able to play my backups on any wii using my personal emulated nand. I don't think we'll see too many people sharing their device.cert or full emulated NANDs with pirated rips of games (that's just stupid), so this would likely prevent piracy but also allow people to load their HDD full of games on a friends' Wii. I don't know if this is possible, or something tueidj wants to pursue, but I thought I'd mention it (I bet I am waaaaaay off, this is a very complex project and I doubt I know enough to even speculate properly).

Another question... if I have an older model Wii that can play backup discs, will I be able to rip\play those discs using devolution (assuming 1:1 rips)? Or would I need to go digging through boxes to find the originals? Quite honestly there are only 2 or 3 GC games I own so if I need to search for the originals and re-rip them it's not a big deal for me specifically.

I hope these are things tueidj has already considered and I'm happy to see some AP measures being taken on this project... I just hope there is a way I can play my legit backups on my friends' Wii but without having to re-rip them or leave any loopholes open for people to pirate. In either case, these are some potential "loopholes" off the top of my head, so I figure sharing them before it's released will allow tueidj to make sure they definitely won't work to enable piracy. And if he's already taken measures to prevent these potential loopholes... well, sorry for wasting your time :P

Where do you see a contradiction?

The anti piracy only benefits second hand sellers of gamecube games. I have several GC games that won't play and I can only hope I don't have to re-purchase them for devolution.

Ok I just want to throw my 2 cents in on this. Firstly, I am highly impressed with the potential for this project. Second, I noticed that support for Gamecube-less Wii is going to be a part of this project. As per my understanding these Gamecube-less Wiis can't read/support Gamecube discs. So to all the talk about anti-piracy, I think for now we can rule out any methods that would require having the original discs, because if you have a Gamecube-less Wii how could you use the original disc(s) in any way?

I have my own question though. I know this project is about being able to play Gamecube games without a Gamecube controller, but will this project support them anyways or is that not an option? I mean for some games like Super Smash Bros: Melee and MK:DD a Gamecube controller just feels right where no other controller scheme does.

DeadlyFoez:
Something about it being for newer wiis which dont support gamecube discs

You
You must dump it yourself in your wii
If I have newer then its not possible.

Well, if you end up having to repurchase your games that are destroyed and you decide that you really don't want to, then what have you lost since you can't play them as of now anyways.

There is absolutely no point of taking guesses right now since the software is not released. This is starting to sound like those threads "Will the Wii U be hackable?".

Because I can still play those games with DML but Devolution when completed will be a better option, especially if it has streaming audio support.

Hey, here's a suggestion: Let's stop with the anti-piracy talk. I remember it basically ruining the Riivolution thread a back when it was announced and I would actually like to hear about how tueidj did this. Whatever he does or doesn't do he made it clear he hasn't decided on what it will be yet anyway so you should all stop jumping to conclusions.

You probably would need the computer to do the ripping stuff and I for sure gladly support that because the speed is much much better, and if tueidj is going to solve the audio streaming game problem "the way I think" ("converted" when game is ripped) it probably would be very timeconsuming doing it on the wii itself.

How tueidj is going to solve the anti-pirating thingy I have no clue for right now but the fact that you have to use a computer to ripp your games to the SD/USB is for atleast me pretty clear.

uhhh, no, that makes even less sense. The dvd-drives that allow a PC to read original wii\gc games are rare LG drives that almost nobody has.

Anyways, I think Toad King has the right idea, lets drop the whole AP discussion lest we discourage tueidj
