EDIT:I have heard news of the acekard team splitting apart, so currently the ones that left the team are making their own acekards and the people that stayed on the team are making their OWN acekards as well (real ones)
Quite a few of them are clones(the ones that use actel) and the real ones (no actel chip anymore.) A few of the "clone" ones do not update the bootstrap correctly.

So if you could summarize, the acekard team is basically two teams now making their each own versions of acekards which might cause complications in hardware and compatibility with the firmware updater as the people that left their team do not have access to the development updates of the acekard, such as the 1.4 Bootstrap updater. Therefore, if you have a clone acekard it may brick if it is the "clone" one.

Ok, I have seen countless threads about people getting their AK2i's bricked because they attempted to update their bootloader. First thing is first, determine and find out what HWID you have by running the 1.4 updater. ( DO not Press START to update, this is only to check for fake HWID, as AKAIO is limited to 8 bits (0 to 255), therefore it will not display the clone HWID correctly.)

If you have a HWID 44, 80, etc, it should work with the bootloader. If you have a weird hardware ID, it is most likely a clone. The current HWID's of acekard2i's are as following.
    1.4444 aka 44
    2.8181 aka 81
    3.8888 aka 88
If your AK2i is a clone download this is upgrade it to 1.4 with the r4i updater. download here

Disregard the info If you have read this before, it will confuse you, as I have just updated this guide.

    Hopefully this will help everyone.

You can also compare and look at the physical hardware itself to determine a clone or not. This requires taking apart your AK2i which I do NOT recommend.

Refer to this if you want to dissassemble your AK. HERE

As for HWID 8181 I think its false that this means its a cloned card. My card came from an Authorized Acekard retailer and I was able to flash just fine. HWID shows 8181 and I can run Akaio 1.5.1 just fine as well. I have 3 cards coming from DX here in a couple days and will test those all out as well..

    @bach3609,
You might have "jumped the gun" just a fraction early with this thread about the AK2i clones....read here: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=184332&st=30

Thanks to SillYconE for informing us unlucky souls of how to update the clone carts to work on DSi FW 1.4

I bought all my cards from DX and they all have the same HWID: 8181.
Does this mean that DX sells clones ?
Can someone explain why some cards update well and some freeze at 0% and need to be 'updated' with R4 software ?
One last information: the issue appeared only on recent shippings from DX, all my other cards updated well through ak software.

Forgive my ignorance but why would you need to flash the cart? I got mine and put Akaio 1.5 on it straight away, seemingly without issue? I saw this update listed on the site I got AKAIO from but no clear answer?

AK2i dont work with DSi FW 1.4. That is the reason to update FW of AK2i (to work with DSi FW 1.4)

Some latest dont have to be updated...

Exactly what he said. You will need to flash your Acekard if you have a DSI 1.4 to work on it.

I bought four Acekard 2is from DX on Jan 1st, 2010. They all had a hardware ID of HW:8181 in the updater. All but one updated, the r4 updater fixed that one. I think a few of the R4 clones got mixed in the Acekard build bin. The clone looked spot on perfect next to the original. Its almost like they assembled the chip with the official case and box, I could find no differences.
