Desktop Crashed, Won't Turn On

I don't know of any good ways to test the motherboard. Too many parts of a motherboard that can fail for different reasons.

Motherboard testers? I love mine. I can diagnose a problem quickly without detaching and reattach crap for hours.

Completely forgot those existed. I remember seeing ones for diagnosing laptops, didn't realise they apply to desktops too.

I have those too, they're a LOT less helpful than their desktop counterparts. Almost useless, actually.

My computer goes into a power cycle loop if I turn my monitor on before my PC.

This happened to me exactly the same as the OP. I checked all the voltages on my PSU and could find nothing amiss. Then I went out and bought a laptop.

Plugged in another PSU, everything booted up normally. So it looks like my suspicions were right, the PSU is bad.

raulpica, you actually have a use for your PC test cards? I think I only have mine for the same reason I occasionally use the command line when fixing a computer.

Edit. That said it does come with a male-male USB cable.

Funny, I guess only the +5V lane went bad. Rare case, usually it's the +12V which dies, and the PC won't boot up at all in that case.

I use it to check if there's something preventing the PC from booting. CPU not recognized (00), and I'll check the CPU... DRAM error (35, IIRC?) and I'll check the RAM. Something else and I'll check the VGA. Blah blah.

The USB male-to-male is for powering it as some slots don't send enough power it seems? It could actually work via USB as _some_ motherboards actually send the 07h (or something like that) interrupts over USB as well. Pretty rare, though.

I just take a multimeter/voltmeter to the board LIKE A BOSS! Who needs test cards when you can do it the hard way . Its at least funner this way? lol
