Hah, you seriously think that Intel can do better multicore performance than AMD right now? Ryzen's current arch allows it to scale way better over multiple cores thanks to Infinity Fabric, Intel has hit a dead end with their arch, they can only throw more cores at it until they attempt something newer by 2021, the only reason they kept their game going on for so long was due to gains with new fabs, now that they are reaching 7nm, they won't be getting more gains without work. Intel is pulling the "throw cores at it" meme like AMD did with Bulldozer, so that is indeed hilarious, and their attempt against Ryzen with the X299 Intel Core i9 ended with massive power usage.

Ryzen is a fantastic chip, it works better than Intel in everything except gaming atm, due to sightly weaker (6th gen Core i7 era performance) single core performance, if AMD can fix that by Zen2, they can keep Intel on bay until they can pull a better arch. And even if it somehow can get better multicore performance, Ryzen is a better choice due to price/performance right now. Jim Keller designed Zen well, shame that he left AMD for Tesla, dude's pretty much God tier with CPU designs.


Furthermore, there is no public data about Coffee Lake, only Intel's own benchmarks, which are obviously rigged to look better than it is.

AMD is far from dead, right now they are the best option if you care about futureproofing or doing more than just playing "muh games", it is a well-balanced CPU, allows you to game well and stream, edit video faster, etc. Shame that they didn't pull it off the same trick on the GPU side, Vega is a power hungry disappointment, maybe they can get it by Navi.

Their Polaris cards aren't so bad, sadly their attempt at high end was a failure.
 
The main problem I have with AMD products in general is that they are not efficient relative to Intel. Both their CPUs and Radeon cards run super hot. If AMD can bring power usage down while increasing IPC with each architecture revision for their products they are golden. They will be OK as long as PS4 and Xbox One consoles continue to sell.

Yeah, because Intel integrated GPUs are so much more powerful AMD Radeon GPUs. But seriously, even my fairly low end RX 470 is far superior to the latest Intel HD Graphics 630.

Ryzen is currently a platform that's very capable of competing with Intel. The instruction count per clock takes a bit of a hit in comparison to Intel, but the performance-per-dollar is generally much better. A Ryzen 1300X with a motherboard to overclock it costs nearly as little as a comparable i5-7400 without a motherboard. Meanwhile, Coffee Lake (the full details of which still haven't been released or tested) will add more cores/threads, but whether the per-thread performance will add anything of note is still up in the air.

Additionally, despite essentially being a new generation of (and using the same socket as) Skylake and Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake CPUs appear to be entirely incompatible with older chipsets - there's the added cost of a new motherboard to consider if you're 'upgrading' from *lake. Ryzen uses a new socket/chipset too, but AMD's usually good at providing more than two years of compatibility.

AMD's shooting itself in the foot with Vega, though. It could compete with higher-end NVidia cards, to a degree, but it looks like it's been rushed to market, and the reasonable prices are apparently just introductory promos. It doesn't serve a whole lot of purpose for anyone but miners at this point.

This is an idiotic post. AMD has survived for years with crap products. They have something competitive now (especially in content creation). The R5 1600/1600X is especially important. Even though they have the same number of cores, you get 12 threads with an R5 1600, and 6 threads with an i5. All the Ryzen 7 products have 8 cores and 16 threads, as opposed to the i7's 6 cores and 12 threads. All Ryzen products can be overclocked, but most Intel ones can't.

The only real problem with Ryzen that exists is it's RAM needs. Infinity Fabric (how the cores communicate with each other) runs at the same frequency as the RAM. That means you need at least 3000MHz RAM to get its full potential.

It doesn't even seem useful for miners right now, since they're only selling them in bundles, making the cost of the card itself rather high unless you are also in the market for a new motherboard, Ryzen CPU, monitor etc...
 
Its not really stopping them, they are still buying them up like crazy

They got the entry level to mid range pretty locked down, but really need to work on the higher end.
People bitching about that it doesnt beat the 1080ti or whatever while only the 1%'s can buy these cards, not everyone has $700-800 to plop down on a single graphics card, they make a ton of money around the $100-200 range cards.
 
No matter what people say, including me, AMD will always have a place in this industry. There needs to be a competitor, and AMD has the budget gaming market on lock. Also, Intel's latest offerings are honestly not looking so interesting. A couple of their latest chips are kinda disappointing, honestly. AMD is rightfully gaining headway against Intel right now. Besides, their CPU and GPU sales are alright, and they'll at least keep floating. AMD is not going to die.
 
AMD have alledgedly been dieing for years. Not sure why some people seem so eager for AMD to die. If AMD die, enjoy progress at a snails pace and absurd pricing for the rest of time. Intel sitting on their ass for the last few years when AMD had nothing but the FX was just a preview. Progress at a snails pace and cost cutting as soon as the FX wasn't comparable ipc wise. Bit of competition and suddenly Intel want to bring 6 core to the mainstream socket.

Coffeelake isn't going to do anything to Ryzen. It will be exactly as it is now. If you have to have the best single threaded ipc for whatever reason (emulation, trying to push 144fps or even a game that is poorly threaded) then Intel is for you. If you are on a budget, making a media machine (encoding etc) or a mixed usage machine, then Ryzen has you covered. AM4 is also here for the long haul, already comfirmed that zen+/zen2 whatever you want to call it is am4 as well, so people do take that into consideration as it seems a lot are getting fed up with Intel switching sockets for the sake of it. Ryzen apparently also has fantastic yields, so wouldn't be suprised if AMD could drop the prices further if need be.

AMD are still yet to launch Ravenridge apus either. Intel won't have anything to compete against them, Ryzen ipc + decent igp should make for some great budget builds.

There's also epyc. Apparently recieved well and even taking a small percentage from Intel in that sector would be big money.

Skylake-X is being hammered in reviews because it runs hotter than the sun. I really don't know where AMD cpu=hot is coming from these days. AMD aren't the ones using shoddy thermal paste between the ihs and die causing soaring temps. Intel are telling kabylake owners not to overclock because of temps, despite the K series being sold with unlocked multipliers for one reason only, but AMD are apparently the hot running chip.

GPU wise, less said about VEGA the better, not sure what AMD were up to the last 1-2 years. Polaris made good gains on efficiency, somehow they undone it with vega. Definitely down on the efficiency compared to Nvidia. I think temps are overblown though. Long as you get a decent non-ref card, temps aren't an issue. My 290 vapor-x runs barely any hotter than my 1070 quicksilver. Admittedly the vapor-x has a huge triple fan cooler, but a decent aib card with good cooler and temps are fine.

Nice comparison? A dedicated GPU vs integrated... And I'm talking about Nvidia vs AMD in the GPU department... Must be hard for some people...

Realistically? AMD isn't going anywhere.. But they need to pick up the slack that Vega brought and they have to keep the steam going with Ryzen and now Threadripper. I have hopes for them. They used to be pretty competitive and for a while they were just skating by on rehash after rehash.

I think it's obvious that the GPU R&D department suffered to help Ryzen development. It was silly to expect two great products from a relatively small tech company.

I was thinking about Bulldozer and Polaris. Bulldozer had max TDP 125W and were never competitive with Intel chips. Intel chips max out at TDP 95W; that 30W difference can drive up your electric bill fairly quickly. Polaris was also pretty energy inefficient compared to Maxwell. You have to take your electrical bill into consideration when choosing parts.

Intel processors are nowhere as good as AMD one's. All they do is shove more cores and Intel calls it a day.
This is so wrong it hurts. Try treading new ground and not reciting things trolls have said.
 
but if you play games you probably work and have an money for processor lol correct? if the core perform better why go for worse cause cheap?
1) not everyone has american level wages, not even most americans
2) graphics have been good enough for ages
3) performance is usually capped because of bad ports
4) you save money by upgrading more frequently and focusing on your backlog
5) it's just a hobby and spending so much is irresponsible, especially with mostly stagnant wages

Of course, to save money on performance I've had to go Intel, but I'd very much like not to. Especially for those sweet open source graphics drivers and not that optimus abomination. Neither the desktop or the laptop is getting replaced any time soon, though, and I only look at what's going on when I'm buying, so I have no idea about the actual question.

EDIT: mixed up the GPU and CPU a bit on the text, I'm just saying I'd like to support them both ways because fuck monopolies.
