Days Gone director blames "woke reviewers" for poor sales and reception

After claiming that game piracy was leading to "money out of [his] pocket" and that gamers shouldn't complain about games not getting sequels if they don't buy them at launch for full price, the director of Days Gone has gone on to make another amusing statement. In a response to a fan who was "blown away" by how much he enjoyed Days Gone and confused why it wasn't universally praised, the game's writer and director John Garvin claimed that there were three reasons why the game didn't do well, commercially or critically.

Three reasons:
1. it had tech issues like bugs, streaming and frame rate;
2. it had reviewers who couldn’t be bothered to actually play the game
3. And three, it had woke reviewers who couldn’t handle a gruff white biker looking at his date's ass

He blamed reviewers for either not actually playing his game, or on reviewers for being too woke to understand the story of Days Gone, which consisted of a guy trying to reunite with his wife after a zombie apocalypse. In GBAtemp's own, possibly woke opinion, after not playing the game at all, we found it to have a tired, generic take on a genre that had already been done to death, and that, "Days Gone sits at the cusp between good and bad. It exists as a wholly mediocre game, relying so much on its inspiration that it never feels unique. When compared to Sony's recent first-party successes in the form of Spider-Man and God of War, it only makes Days Gone that much blander".

According to Sony, the game managed to sell 8 million copies total, following its PC port, which led to somewhat of a small cult following, though the game remains at a middling 71 Metacritic score. Days Gone was never greenlit for a sequel, and Garvin left Sony to work for Crystal Dynamics, and is currently assisting in the development of an "NFT-themed game".

He deleted his Tweet and privated his account after gamers and reviewers criticized him for his comment, though the remark is archived, here.

Erm... This really sounds like the opposite of a backhanded comment. Like... The woke reviewers could actually stomach the bugs, streaming and frame rate issues. :tpi:

The game is garbage. His claims about the woke cancer is justified, though.

Alright so the extremists of the Democratic Party are supposedly too woke. Do you prefer the extremists of the Republican Party, like MTG? She just stated that under her watch the January sixth riots would have been successful because she would have brought guns to the capital.

I will take the person who is overly sensitive about pronouns over the insurrectionist anyday.

The problem is with the two party system. It's really showing its ugliness now where minority is calling the shorts due to the 50-50 situation. Both party are trying to please the most crazy people just to tip the scale a bit. Just let one party dominate and things will be better for everyone. Don't you long for days gone where the party leaders were not trying to please the crazy people in their party?

I don’t think democrats are crazy though. What’s crazy about wanting the wealthy to pay more in taxes to fund social spending programs. Or treating transgender individuals in a decent manner. Or keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people.

Democrats didn’t look to overthrow the government. Nor are any in favor of banning abortion even in cases of rape.

As for being against the two party system…go take a look at Ralph naders effect in the 2000 election. That’s what happens when a bunch of voters with chips on their shoulder get too cute with their vote.

There are some crazy people (I hope only minority) on both sides, there is no denying that. There is woke "to be aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues, especially those related to social and racial justice" and there is woke "to want to condemn you to hell if you are not behaving like a crazy woke person like them". These crazy woke want to kill on behalf of people who are not even angry. All they wanted in life is to be more woke than the next person. Maybe you get woke police instead of morality police in the USA when certain people becomes the supreme commander of the country. People who are seen to be not woke will be in custody for reeducation.

a) kotaku isnt representative of video game journalists
b) no one cares about user scores
c) days gone was a boring game
A: Kotaku is literally a Journalist platform focused on GAMES.... Christ "Days Gone review" is their site top of all the search engines, it is THE review given to people first.
B: User score always go against Critics scores User scores are the Real scores in the Customer driven sector.
C: Then write a user Score in your own words doesn't matter thus you don't matter to the discussion and irrelevant at you own admission.
