Posted here on the suggestion of another member.

The left directional pad on my nephew's DS Lite is broken. The up, right, and down keys still work fine. Will replacing the rubber pads underneath the keys fix this problem? Or is this a motherboard issue?

Thanks!

Solution
it's quite possible that somehow the rubber pad slid and the conductive circle on the underside is not making contact across the 2 halves for the left direction, but more than likely the conductive portion has worn out or become dirty and is no longer able to bring the 2 halves of the left direction.

if you have the ability to disassemble the lower half, I would suggest doing so (see the dis-assembly/re-assembly guide in the attached link below) and using something like isopropol alchohol to clean the rubber pad for the d-pad, re-assemble the motherboard (2 screws) and try your luck.

this is really something that belonds in the hardware section of gbatemp as you are looking for answers and not trying to better the community through a question posted in the "ask" section.

your problem could be dust related. a $5 can of compressed air would be my first suggestion. your problem might be mobo related, calling nintendo about a replacement is a good idea (its a free call).
