Do you think Nintendo (or a third party) will ever release replacement casings for the DS Lite, like the ones that exist for the DS Phat? That would take care of the "crack" problems.

Say no to crack!!!!

I doubt it that Nintendo or official third party companies will release replacement shells for it as I don't think Nintendo would want people opening up DS lites anyway. There were some chinese(?) replacement shells on sale on eBay though for the DS Phat so maybe they'll make one for lites too, but I mean copying the look of the lite casing is different (or maybe harder to produce) compared to the simple plastic DS phat shell.

On a not-so-related note, at first I thought these were replacement shells made by Hori so I was kinda surprised, but turned out they were just snap-on armor.

Very nice.
And it comes in different colours. When a navy blue one comes, it's mine!

Too bad it won't prevent the cracking.

Yeah looks nice and I am kinda a Hori Whore. I might get a enamel navy one to since I think it will lessen the fugly thumbmark smudges. I'm not a fan of those silicon DS condom things.

Anyway, on topic: if any of my DS lites are cracked, I'm pretty much stuck with them as I live in a faraway 3rd world country and won't get support from Nintendo.

Mine had a little crack that turned into a full blown crack today. Have never dropped it so that's not the reason. It doesn't bother me too much, but it will if the black dsl comes to the states before my return policy is up.

We don't know for sure about the glossiness since all they had was a prototype and then 6 photoshoped pics. The final product should look better but whether it looks as good as the origional remains to be seen.

I HOPE those shell replacements don't have the gloss. It's such a pain in the ass to keep it looking clean. I prefer the satin finish.

I've had my ds lite since it's US release in early july, and I just got the crack today.

What I think causes it is too much pressure on the hinge when flipping up the screen. Here's how I open it, I hold the the botton part of the DS with my right hand, thumb over the dust cover, middle finger over the DS game slot, and fore finger over the wrist strap part and support the bottom half of the DS with the rest of my fingers.

With my left hand, I open the screen by lifting the left corner of the lid, and that's why there is extra pressure on the left hinge. If you haven't cracked your DS lite yet, I suggest you start opening your screen from the center, and not the corners.

I don't think the way you open DSLite has something to do with it. Mine Lite cracked yesterday and I actually heard it doing so - soft but distinct snapping sound. It happened not during opening or closing, but just in normal opened state (1st click). I think there's some defect in casing design (and/or materials used) that causes more tension than hinge can handle in opened state. It takes some time for plastic to crack, but I somehow doubt that only 0.02% of the North American white ones are affected. 0.02% could have this crack right out of the box maybe.

Hey, guys, flip over your DSL, and look it at from the back.

I noticed that the right side ( the side with the L if looking at it that way ) has a dip. Like it bends, the hinge, not in the center, but about 3/4 to the right.
