I too have had my white DS Lite since april and it has no crack and I use it everyday. I just got a black one and it seems pretty well made also, it doesn't make a crunch sound when I open it up all the way 180 deg like my friends US one does. So maybe the US DS Lites were rushed out.

My US lite is also looking good so far, no crack what so ever.
And I bought mine the first day, so there is a possibility there
could have been a bad batch of whites.

Other than being freaked out by all these cracked ds lites. I cannot see how these cracks are occuring. I dont think its because of weak plastic, since they are all manufactured from the same plastic right?
Ive checked mine, and touch wood, there is no cracks to be seen.
I exchanged a creaky screen ds, and the new one makes an even louder snap when opened that the previous one, so I dont think that makes the cracks appear. It simply tells you how solid the hinge is.

That said, the left side of my ds lite is slightly loose meaning it can be moved very slightly, 95% less that the old ds, but it does move in certain circumstances, e.g. if Im trying to rock it.
Perhaps the cracks are a result of the hinge being screwed on too tightly on some ds lites, which puts pressure on each of the hinges when the ds lite is opened till eventually one cannot stand the pressure and snaps, which relieves the pressure of the other hinge, meaning only one side will ever snap.

If Nintendo does eventually cover this repair under warranty, they better refund the people who bought one-time-use skins and screen protectors. I'd be a bit miffed if I paid 10-20 bucks on something that has to be removed due to a fault of Nintendo.

Yes, but is this problem FIXED? What's the point of getting a DS replaced if Nintendo hasn't even publicly acknowledged the issue. I don't (and will not) want to send in my DS to them for weeks on end only to receive one back with the same (eventual) issue.

It is obvious that the White DS Lite's plastic is weaker, so people who don't have a DS Lite yet should not buy a white one just out of precaution.

I don't think it's obvious. When you think about it white is the only colour that is sold in every region.

USA only has white also.

Only a small percentage of the total number of DS Lites will be black or other colours.

I also believe Nintendo should publicly apologize to everyone for stating 'You dropped it'. Accusing a customer of something, whether or not it's their fault or not, is not something you want to do. If you took down the name and employee #/ID of the person on the phone and spoke to corporate about it, I'm sure that person would get a nice talking to. It's Business 101, never accuse your customer of anything.

Even if they said 'Physical damage like that is caused by dropping the DS' is unacceptable, because it's an outright lie. If the customer support folks don't have a clear cut answer to the issue, they shouldn't say a damn thing and insult their customer base.

I love the DS, it's a brilliant system, but Nintendo sure knows how to remove customer loyalty.

It reminds me of when I rang fujitsu about my laptop, I said the card reader, usb ports and pcmia card slot wasn't working.

He told me it's impossible unless it got struck by lightening and then tried to scare me off by saying I'd be charged £100 of it was a software issue when returned. This was after he tried to get me to call premium rate software helpline.

I sent it back and turned out the northbridge of the motherboard was broken and I got a new motherboard put in

BestSkinsEver said they *might* offer replacement skins on defective units if the owner can show proof of purchase (and send the skin back before shipping it), and proof of a defective unit. This is excellent news.

Is there something here I'm not seeing? If that tiny, barely visible unless you look for it crack is the only problem you got with your Lite, you should be happy. As far as I know it doesn't affect the hinge in anyway and is only a cosmetic problem, and very small one at that. Dead pixels or faulty diagonals could be what your getting with your new Lite.

The cracked hinge could only be the first symptom of a bigger issue. What if something internal relys on that piece to be connected to properly disperse stress? Since that hinge is cracked, it could cause other cracks or stress dispersal elsewhere and possibly result in the top half falling off.

small cosmetic problems lead to bigger issues over time... a small rust spot on a car can lead to the entire panel corroding.
