To me it looks like the crack is caused by the way you hold it when using the D-Pad.
It's very easy to push up hard on the top screen with your left trigger finger when playing a game that has heavy D-Pad use.
Try it and you'll see what I mean.

when you've got your finger on the left trigerr like in metroid prime hunters it's very easy to push up on the top screen without realising.

I spoke to the Nintendo service center Australia today - they have received and assessed the cracked left hinge of my DS-Lite and have attributed it to being "damaged due to undue pressure by the user".

Not quite what I was expecting and must admit I'm pretty disappointed. Can't imagine what sort of force is undue considering its only 5 weeks old and never taken out of the house. The damage looks identical to all those cracked DS's I've been seeing on the net.

So I've been given two options:

- Pay $55 to receive a new DS-Lite
- Pay $25 to get back my old unfixed DS-Lite

*sigh* So the lesson in Australia is don't assume a cracked left hinge is a warranty fix.

Tell them you want to speak with the supervisor and that you know NOA is fixing it for free for the countless people that have cracked hinges. Tell them you are not paying them to fix a defect that was caused by their factory, not by your hands. Be stern but don't be an asshole. Cry if you need to.

That crack on the left hinge is caused by a metal tube that is being used as a hinge. it's expanding inside the hinge and causing the hinge to tighten. I took mine out and "squished" it a little to loosen the hinge, the crack looks like a hairline crack again, not like those huge cracks I'm seeing on the net.

Mine started out as a hairline crack and has gotten bigger over time. Really makes me sad. I bought mine from Costco and those that don't know of them, they have a very lax return policy (I used to work there) and I'll return and exchange it for a black one once it gets out here.

Mine has the crack too. It would be great if Nintendo acknowledges this and offers a swap. Unless it has new firmware that renders a G6 useless!

The "crack" is not caused by anything we do. I just purchased a brand new DS Lite tonight, and guess what? The hinge had the same damn crack...right out of the box. This is happening obviously due to a design flaw...so badly that it happens in shipping I suppose. I returned it and went back to the phatty. I'll sit on the sidelines with this one until newer revisions of the device are released.

In Germany only one in a hundred NDS gets a cracked hinge no matter if black or white.

Sad part is our touchscreens generally SUCK, they have that yellowish finish on each f****ing unit

I just noticed my hinge was cracked yesterday (it wasn't there a few days ago). I bought mine at U.S. launch.

I was going to send it in a few weeks anyways for other defects. Looks like this is another thing to add to the list.

Well whatever the reason for the cracking hinge is, it looks like it will eventually break. The reason I say this is because parts of it (on the way left and right sides) are made too small and are too thin and may crack sometime, whether it be a few months or a year or so. Yours might not even crack at all, who knows. Hopefully Nintendo reconstructs the hinge better, here's a pic of how it could work:

dslitehingerv6.jpg

The image on the top is obviously what our DS Lites sorta look like, the one on the middle is one way it could be rebuilt (though I don't know if this is a good idea and if the hinge may be able to fall apart, which is why you should take a look at the third DS Lite). The DS Lite on the bottom of the picture shows what it would be like if the left and right sides of the hinge were bigger (and less likely to break easily).

This is just an example of how the hinge could have better construction, of course they may actually look better than how they were drawn and may be constructed differently (that is, if Nintendo really does this).

Ahh, my DS Lite's developed a crack! /o\

Ah well, doesn't affect functionality at all, I think?

I would change it.. or rather I changed mine. You get a new DS and you don't need to worry about if it does affect anything else or not. I can add that some say that their DS has cracked more when they kept their hinge cracked ds

So far mine isn't getting worse or affecting anything. I think it's a gamble exchanging it, you could get a DS with dead pixels or a yellow screen or loose touch screen, etc. I think if this crack doesn't get worse I'll hold onto my DS because it doesn't have any of those other problems.

It's also a gamble keeping it, we have seen that it can cause more cracks in the long term with the whole top screen breaking off in the end.

Where did you get that statistic? I met a friend on GC. He told me he didn't have the crack on his Lite. I had a look at it. He did have the crack. I think this is very common, and a lot of people just didn't notice it, yet, or don't care. By now, I also don't think that it has got much to do with regional batches or the color of the plastic, all colors and regions are affected. But again, it's quite hard to notice on a black Lite.

Here's a photo I took earlier, apologies for the poor quality, it was taken at work on my phone:

The annoying part is I take really good care of it, so it's almost certainly not down to an error on my part.
