If you go to the store and buy some food, it belongs to you. There's no license. Same with games.
lol do you order dominoes and replicate it untill the cows come home? . . . comparing digital media to tangible items does not work. true you own the game disk (unless otherwise authorized by the licensing agreement you cant copy or edit it) . . . disk being the operative word here this also extends to pure digital content as well . . . the next time you go to start any of your supposedly legal "personal backup" on your 3ds open the manual and read section one here is what you will find . . . "Except as authorized, copying of any Nintendo software is illegal and is strictly prohibited by domestic and international intellectual property laws." . . . you were saying . . . ?
It's no longer theirs
say it with me . . . intellectual property
Don't share it, you're good.
the same game manual goes on to say ( in the very next line in fact)
""back-up" or "archival" copies are not authorized."

Don't treat me like I'm an idiot, alright? Perhaps you're not seeing my POV. I'm seeing this as; " I just bought something, it's mine. ". Not; " I just bought something, but, this here says it still doesn't belong to me. ". This is only a natural right. This isn't up for Nintendo to decide what we do with our legally bought GAMES. And no silly little file or piece of paper is going to tell me I don't own something after buying it. This is not Nintendo's option to say after I bought something that it's " Not mine.". That's not how it works with natural human rights. I own it, I will use it to my hearts desire in any way.
Don't let the paper tell you how things work. It's your game, it's your right.
Just don't let others have your copy.

Game manuals are not law. That they say you can't make copies is as irrelevant as if your neighbor says you can't cut down a tree on your property.

Hello people! I was just wondering if it is legal to download a copy/rip of a game if you already own a physical copy? (e.g: emulation)

Technically, no, you have to make the copy yourself (which is legal under copyright law so long as you retain the original). Realistically, there's really no way you're going to get in trouble for it, and even if somehow they came after you, having the original makes it almost impossible they'd be able to prove your copy was DL'd instead of self made. Pretty much the only thing to worry about is if you share that copy, including by torrent. Stick to direct downloads if you're particularly worried about getting in trouble. Stick to making your own personal copies if you're worried about the letter of the law.

you are completely correct. If you copy your own, legally bought game - there are no laws being broken. As soon as you distribute said copies, it is illegal. Same is said of downloading roms, it's illegal as it infringes on numerous copyright laws.

no no i see your point it is ethically wrong of them to retain any degree of control after the sale but. . . ethically is not legally (at least not in the usa)
This isn't up for Nintendo to decide what we do with our legally bought GAMES.
again you did not buy the game you bought license to use the game (still not the same but similar to owning a car and being legally able to drive it)
that license comes with a copy for licensed use only

if you truly bought the game then you would own rights to said game as well including distribution so the first sale would be the last sale . . . as a result laws on digital media are very different compared to other laws on the topic sale
And no silly little file or piece of paper is going to tell me
. . . enough said you dont care that its not legal but then why the charade about how it is legal if you are governed by ethics and not laws?

for the record i do believe the siding of the law on this matter is bullshit but like you i (alone) cant change the law
