I've seen some controller modding companies offer magnetic faceplates instead of ones that clip on and have to be pried off. How difficult would it be to take some random Extremerate faceplate, clip the tabs, and glue some magnets onto it? Seems simple, right? Is there any reason I shouldn't do this? I'm rocking an Elite 2

The front and back case screw together either directly or through a hole in the board. If you remove the screws, the case will not be firmly attached to the circuit board inside. IFixit's teardown of the Elite shows the screw posts in the front cover most clearly:
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Xbox+One+Elite+Controller+(Model+1698)+Disassembly/97231

You might want to replace the screws with bolts and have a nut and washer on the front side in the middle to secure the back plate to the circuit board. These might even be enough for the magnets you fit to stick onto : ).

Also be aware of interfering with the other magnetic bits of the controller - the analog triggers are Hall Effect - they detect the movement of magnetic pads. And the Elite controllers have magnets securing the analog sticks and d-pad.
