Hacking Controllers' problems

Since the beginning of the year my controllers are all screwed up. I have two fake DualShock 3 (both bought on the last Summer) and a Thrustmaster Dual Trigger 3-in-1 (bought some years ago) which also works on the PS2.

The Thrustmaster Dual Trigger 3-in-1 randomly presses the "Cross" button in the XMB. Also, the "START" button has to be pressed a little hard otherwise it won't work (I think I already had this problem before installing CFW for the first time). Moreover, after moving the left analog stick, the character moves a lot more when compared to the fake (and I guess the real) DualShock 3 and so it's hard to control it, although the controller might have been built this way.

When playing a game in one of the fake DualShock 3, the character moves to the right and both make the camera rotate, so they have analog stick drift and one of them even has it in both analog sticks.

I had different controllers' problems in the recent past (it looks like they keep changing) and now I have these. I also have the Thrustmaster Dual Trigger 3-in-1 issues on the PS2 and the fake DualShock 3 ones on the PS3 if using the USB cable (I even changed it and I still have the problems).

I borrowed a real DualShock from a friend and I still had the issues. Plus, my friend didn't have the problems I'm having with my controllers in his PS3 after I lent him mine.

This started some time after installing CFW (Rebug 4.82.2) for the first time on the PS3 back in August (although the controllers' problems were different back then) and I even formatted the console afterwards (and restaured the default settings, which IIRC formatted the console again), installed OFW and I still had these issues. I'm on CFW again (Rebug 4.84.2) and I still have these problems. It's so frustrating since I can't play a game in normal conditions.

Sounds like the blue tooth in the console may be bad. Just swap it out and see if it helps.

That's what I was thinking but I don't know how to change it. But is it normal to also have problems when playing with the USB cable and not only wirelessly?

I have a similar issue but only with the one controller. As for wired VS wireless, I think wired is only for charging and that it still uses BT for playing games (not 100% about this) when plugged in to USB.

It's possible that the internals of the controller might be gummed up. Worth a look inside and a clean.

Swapping out a BT is easy. Only 5 screws and a ribbon cable hold it on in a fat. Not sure about a slim but I’d bet it’s even easier. There is some direct data transfer with the controllers to the USB though... that’s why it will have you plug a controller in when you first turn a PS3 on (or reformat the HDD). So it could be your controllers just took a crap on you.

Too difficult for me and I'd have to do it in all three DualShock 3 controllers since the real one also has problems.

If swapping out BT is too difficult (how do you know without trying) then you're going to be out of luck if that is the cause.

Yeah, sounds more and more like the BT went out. Should cost less than $10 on eBay.

That's the problem. I guess it is since I never unscrewed things.

CECH-2004B. It's a PS3 Slim. I don't know if different PS3s require different BT modules.

I bought an used Sixaxis. So far, the controller is working well but the other ones were too before starting to have problems some weeks/months after.

Now, I'm having right analog stick stick on this used controller, the PS3 turned off without warning, the games are slow (maybe because they're being run from an external HDD), the console froze when playing some of them so I had to shut it off without having to take its power cord, on one occasion the PS3 froze when playing a game and I had to take its power cord to turn it off and the console stopped reading BRs.

Is this a hacked console? What are the temp readings of your GPU and CPU? Could be a couple problems going on with the freezing. I’d open it, clean it, and replace the thermal paste. While you’re at it replace the BT with any 2000 - 2100 model.

Yes, it is. One of the temps (the CPU one, I think) is + 70°.

I don't know how to unscrew the PS3 to clean it and apply new thermal paste (the console makes a lot of noise).

Do you think the BT module causes the controllers' problems? I also have them when playing without their USB cables or even when playing with wired controllers. The controllers are fine until they start having problems some weeks/months after (even new ones). If these problems have to do with the BT module and not with the controllers themselves, I guess I'll stop having them after replacing it.

By the way, I can't use webMAN MOD and sMAN because they freeze my PS3. Do you think it's caused by the PS3's internal HDD?

I’m starting to wonder if you have a blown fuse on your motherboard. If you don’t know how to clean it, this isn’t something you can fix as it requires soldering. Since an unhacked console is only about $50 it’s probably easier for you to just get another and hack it correctly.

Have you heard of these controllers' issues?

EDIT: I bought an used PS3 and I installed Rebug 4.84.2 in it. I haven't installed webMAN MOD and this console hasn't turned off and froze when playing and it reads BRs (although it's still hot and makes a lot of noise). Also, regarding slow PS3 games (ran from an external HDD), I guess only the european G-Force PS3 ISO was actually slow. I played it again (from the same external HDD) and I think it didn't slow down.

EDIT 2: After all, the Sixaxis only has right analog stick drift when playing a specific game (european Sonic Generations), which is odd.

EDIT 3: I bought an used DualShock 3 and I'm not having problems so I hope I don't have them again, at least in the near future.

EDIT 4: I bought an used PS3 since the previous stopped reading BRs, installed webMAN MOD and sMAN and they haven't been freezing my PS3 so maybe it was the previous PS3's HDD's fault. Anyway, I got used to IRISMAN so I uninstalled webMAN MOD and sMAN again.

EDIT 5: Now, the DualShock 3's battery is draining fast.

EDIT 6: I ordered a DualShock 3 battery from Amazon but I couldn't unscrew 3 of the 5 screws so I got help and they were able to change the battery with difficulty.

EDIT 7: I gave webMAN MOD a new chance and before reinstalling it I deleted IRISMAN. The "webMAN games" setting was empty with my external HDD connected to the PS3, which is odd. I disconnected it, restarted the PS3 and it wasn't empty. I installed prepISO and use it to scan the external HDD connected to my PS3 every time I make changes to my PS1 and PS3 games (which are now in the same partition) since the external HDD is formatted as NTFS. Also, I wasn't being able to connect the PC to the PS3 via FTP using FileZilla Client and webMAN MOD until I did this.
