So i got this game free from the epic store (nvidia promotion). Ive only played a little but... here are my initial thoughts

-this game is very DEMANDING on specs with Ray Tracing. Its Insane. Im playing on a RTX 2080 SUPER and having RTX(ray tracing) on, it avg 63-68fps but can dip very low to the 40s, and this is just the beginning...

-YES this game has PS3 quality graphics, in case you were wondering. It plays very smooth though like a ps3 game. It the destructables that make it necessary to have ps3 graphics. Changing the resolution higher doesnt help, its just a ps3 game.

-Back to framerates. for 1080p i saw 63-68fps avg. 1440p 33-37fps avg. 2160p 17-27fps avg with RTX high. Even without ray tracing this game is very demanding.

-It plays like Infamous(ps3) mixed with Star Wars The Force Unleashed. very smooth and very responsive.

This game shows that ray tracing simply isnt ready right now, maybe in 5 years it will be but thats only for 1080p, its hard to say if 8k will be the standard by then already but graphics cards would have to make a quantum leap in a short period to achieve ray tracing at 4k at that point. Its a nice game that tries to fully demo what ray tracing can do but for just having the aesthetics alone and purchasing a RTX card simply isnt worth the upgrade.

As for me I missed out on buying a GTX series card but there were a lot of scalpers with gpus in that era so it simply wasnt worth it either and going new with a RTX card was bette than buying a GTX card.

But anyone reading this, DONT BUY A RTX CARD!!! just for raytracing, its not ready and maybe never will be. Go with AMD RX5700XT or higher instead. I realized that my card as "Coil Whine" and its very annoying. I researched the phenomenon and it seems to be happening with a lot of rtx cards, even the really expensive ones, which is not acceptable. Of course i find this out a few days after the 1month return period so Im kinda Screwed.

for reference, my card is a RTX 2080 SUPER - MSI VENTUS OC. All 2080super have the same performance across every design because of all have the same chip and cores and whatnots. the VENTUS card is the cheapest custom design and it costs...

$785 tax included to play Control, a ps3 game, at 1080p 40-68fps. To play the game without ray tracing at 1080p 40-68fps it only costs $70used-$200new on a cheaper AMD or GTX card. I chose the 2080super for 4k 55-65fps and future proofing, but id kind of advise everyone not to do the same.

I think you should look back on how PS3 games actually looked, cause i definitely don't remember any game looking anywhere near that.
Other than that, I take Control as a tech demo, ray tracing isn't optimized properly enough yet and isn't easy to implement, hence why nvidia needs to help in almost every case so far that uses ray tracing

This kind of blurriness is what I don't like in most modern games. If I had the game, I would make a simple reshade preset for you. Just a little tweaking and sharpening should get it to look much better. But it is nowhere near PS3 graphics, it just seems that way because of the bad filter.

EDIT
To prove OP isn't as crazy as it sounds:

It's definitely the blur effect, but remove it and it'll look much better.

EDIT 2:
Mafia III was notorious for this. Just look at how reshade completely fixes it:

since we are talking about ingame RTX when will Minecraft get RTX support?

ive never played Minecraft but I think I'll have to buy it when Ray Tracing comes out. Not sure when that'll be, but theres a mod for AMD card to do raytracing too from what Ive seen on youtube

its almost the exact same thing. Its the first time Ive seen Ray Tracing first hand, and it actually isnt worth the money if someone were to buy an expensive card JUST for rtx.

Oh there is a huge difference, it has way more calculations and can be used for global illumination. Check the new Metro game. Also it's still developing.

LOL that video was made using a movie production card that isnt even buyable or something like $50,000. As far as I seen Control has the best ray tracing tech out right now and it really isnt all that impressive at least to me. Youtubers who probably got a powerful gpu for free probably think its impressive, but me, it really isnt worth the price tag just for raytracing, but for 4k 55-65fps gaming yea its kinda worth it right now. The other cards 2070/2060super just dont even try it LOL (although Control does have some of the smoothest 24-30fps gameplay ive ever seen somehow)

But that doesn't change the point. It isn't the exact same thing as path tracing, it's vastly different. You can't get path tracing to look that good.

Also yes, they used a Volta GPU workstation, but it doesn't matter. What matters is that in the coming future the tech will be heavily optimized, as I said it's still developing. The RTX 2080 Super is a beast of a card, all you need to do is wait and there will be more RTX games in the future that are better optimized. Not to mention, you're trying to do both 4K and RTX.

And arguably, the Metro game is the best RTX enabled game out there currently.

I knew ray tracing was only for 1080p, i looked up the performance of the regular 2080 before i chose the Super variant. I dont have a 120-144hz monitor or a 1440p monitor so i had to just stick to 4k-60f. Im just saying for those that ONLY want Ray Tracing, The cost is not worth it yet (maybe not ever).

Currently maybe so, but I do feel like it'll be the norm in the future. We'll see I guess.

i felt like it was going to be the norm in the future too, but playing Control, I really dont think it's going to be the norm. Because of the move from 1080p to 2160p, and the cost or the wait for a gpu to be able to handle that at a midrange price. It'll be 10years for midrange to have ray tracing at 4k, but at that point 4k wont be the standard anymore. Control the game itself is very good though, even without the ray tracing.

Well in these years tech has been growing rapidly, I don't think it'll be too long.

You should update the 360 to newest dash before RGHing it yes. But not a big deal if you don't, you can install new dash/avatar updates after. It's just easier to do it auto online before, instead manual offline after.

@BigOnYa I wanted to ask you about your experience with seeing south park. Most of the people a bit younger like my younger brother and cousins that are a few younger than me that saw kids found south park funny because of the curse words, kids at school, that seemed like liking the show on a very basic level.

I could not quite have a in depth discussion of the show.

How was it for you? As an adult. What did you find the most interesting part about it. Did you relate to the parents of the kids and their situations. Was it satires, the commentary on society. The references on celebrities' and pop culture.

I remember seeing the very first episode back in the day, and have watched every episode since. I used to set my VCR to record them even, shows how long ago.

I just like any comedies really, and cartoons have always been a favorite of mine. Family guy, American Dad, Futurama, Cleveland Show, Simpsons - I like them all.

South Park is great cause they always touch on relavent issues going on today, and make something funny out of it.

@BigOnYa were you always up to date on the current events and issues of the time or were there issues that you first found out thru south park

Most of the time yea I knew, I watch and read the news regularly, but sometimes the Hollywood BS stuff, like concerning actors slip by me. I don't follow most Hollywood BS (example: the Kardasians)

@BigOnYa there were relevant issues before south park was made, that's why i think a south park prequel/spinoff would be great. Randy and his friends in their child hood

Yea, like them running in high school together, getting into stuff, and how they got hitched and had kids. And how the town of South Park was back then compared to now. That would be cool to see.

    yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@salazarcosplay if they made a prequel, it would still be about current issues, cause it doesn't make sense to make it about stuff that happened 30 years ago that nobody cares about anymore

    it's too late
