Hardware Connection Problem

I set up my 3DS with my wireless connection at home. On the Home screen the top right corner is blue and says Internet. I assume I've done everything correctly. I've tried to get a Friend Code but it simply says ???? - ???? - ????. I've also tried to perform as a System Update but I can't get it to work. It keeps telling me an error occurred.

This is becoming extremely frustrating. Can anyone give suggestions?
