Connecting to My Pokemon Ranch Japanese Platinum update with ENG cart or JPN rom

I recently hacked my wii, and installed the Japan-only My Pokemon Ranch Platinum version, and I am trying to connect my Platinum to it. My ENG Platinum cart doesn't recognize the game at all, no Wii connection options pop up on the start menu. I tried porting my save over to a JPN Platinum ROM run with TwilightMenu. The two connect initially, but once I click past the screen that shows the warning about Pokemon only being able to be withdrawn to the save they were deposited from, connection stops. Any advice? Do I really need to spring for a JPN Platinum cart?

If you can get ahold of a CycloDS Evolution flashcart, you can dump the DS ROM in there and access it with Twilight Menu. ROMs played through CycloDS have full interconnectivity with the Wii and other DS games, unlike with most other means.
