Do you save more space on your USB hard drive if you have it at FAT32 than WBFS since all your games have to be scrubbed to work on it?

For a new feature, I want to know if its possible to add the channel animation to games to view on the USB Loader. It would be pretty neat, and you can enable and disable it in the Global Options menu if you please. Can it happen?

Since very few bother to read the FAQs i'll just keep on re-posting them:

FAT support FAQ
The FAT support has raised a lot of repeated questions, so here's a FAQ about that:

Q: Can it play .iso files directly?
A: No. Only .wbfs files can be used. To convert from .iso to .wbfs use the wbfs_file utility.

Q: Isn't FAT limited to 4GB file size but a game iso is larger than 4GB?
A: Yes, that's why the files are splitted to 2GB or 4GB chunks.
The files are named gameid.wbfs, gameid.wbf1, gameid.wbf2,...
Similar to how the a .rar archive can be split to multiple files (.rar, .r01, .r02,...)

Q: If FAT size is limited to 4GB, why is the .wbfs file splitted to 2GB chunks instead of 4GB?
A: Because of the limitations in the FAT Library that is used (libfat).
EDIT: the limitation has been solved in cfg v48 so now the files are split to 4GB chunks.

Q: What about the file size, games on WBFS partition are scrubbed / compressed, will it take more space on a FAT partition?
A: No, it will take the same space because the files are not in .iso format but instead .wbfs format, which uses the same scrubbing / compression method as on a WBFS partition, actually the file format is the same as the format of the WBFS partition. And to be even more accurate, the .wbfs files will take even less space, because the wbfs block size will be smaller too. (The size depends also on the selection which partitions are copied - all or only game)

Q: I have copied the .wbfs files to my usb drive but the loader doesn't see them?
A: The files have to be copied to the \wbfs folder on the FAT partition, like this: D:\wbfs\GAMEID.wbfs

Q: Can I extract all the games from a WBFS partition to .wbfs files?
A: Yes, use this command:
wbfs_file.exe W: extract_wbfs_all D:\wbfs
Where W: is your WBFS partition and D:\wbfs is the FAT partition on USB (or on local hard-disk)

Q: How to convert all the .iso files to .wbfs files in one step?
A: Open up CMD where your iso files are and run:
for %i in (*.iso) do wbfs_file.exe "%i"
If you write that in a .bat batch file then you have to use %%i instead of %, like this:
for %%i in (*.iso) do wbfs_file.exe "%%i"

Q: How long does it take to convert one game to .wbfs?
A: Depends on hard drive speed and (scrubbed) game size. It should take the same time as copying a file. That means a couple of seconds for a game like WiiPlay which uses only about 100MB and a couple of minutes for games that take up 4GB...

Q: Are there any GUI wbfs managers that support .wbfs files on a FAT partition?
A: Yes:
by pccfatman: (gui for wbfs_file) Simple WBFS File Manager v2.3
by r3lay: post: wbfs_file Simple GUI 1.0.5 file: http://kurse.co.uk/gui.zip
by fig2k4: Wii Backup Manager

Q: Does running games from a FAT formatted SD / SDHC card work?
A: No, not yet. Yes, added in version 49a

Q: What is the recommended cluster size when formatting FAT?
A: It's not important - any size should work fine. But 32kb is a good choice as that size is aligned to wii disc sector size.

Q: Is it possible to install a game from a dvd disc to a FAT partition in .wbfs format?
A: Yes. Just press button + to install the game as usual.

Q: Is there any advantage using FAT rather than a WBFS partition?
A: No.

Is there a way to easily convert a WBFS drive to FAT32? (without reformatting and losing all the games I already have installed)

Thanks

i backupped all my games too another hdd and reformed my wii drive to fat32 and copied the games as .wbfs file back to the wii hdd. that took quiet some time, but imo it's worth it.

aren't gamecube loaders disc based? so u can't play isos off hdd's anyway. i doubt gamecube loaders care about fat32.

Goddamit people, you really can't read, can you?

Then why bother asking a question if you're not able to read anyway?

For me the benefit of FAT is I can use the rest of the drives free space easily and have no trouble with other homebrew struggling with partitions.

I can install games on usb hdd (imation apollo 250GB), i can seee them in the list, options work (i can download covers). but games will not boot.
screen says: booting game .... and freeze , i need powerbutton to stop the process
I put games on it through the wii dvd and through a backup manager. Same games boot good from Neogamma R8 channel
The wii has also a modchip, i don't know which one, it is not my wii

My system (waninkoko) 4.2E
CFG 49 (HBC)
CFGv48 (channel)
cIOS rev14

Who can help me, i search whole day for the solution
Do you use WBFS or FAT partition?
Do you have ios222 installed?
Are you using the regular or -fat release?

I will thank you for searching with me to the solution.

To get the game started i did the following:

I deleted the wbfs partition and i made a new Primary partition on it with FAT32
This partition is formated through CFG to WBFS, i cannot use FAT32 partition because
my WII freezes with ios = 222-mload option loaded
(the first time it was not a primary but logical partition and it was formatted by Wiibackupmanager)

now i have a new small problem left

when i want to copy a backup game from dvd drive(wii) to the hdd i get error
wbfs panic : malloc fst
when i copy a original game, then no problems

I saw on http://gbatemp.net/index.php?s=&showto...t&p=1910754 with the same problem, no answer on it
it is not a big problem for me, i only have to copy original games through the we, because my laptop dvd can not read the some wii original games

Maybe someone has the solution, if it excists

I have no idea what could be wrong, you're also the first to report such a problem.
I can tell where the error is coming from (libwbfs/wiidisc.c : do_files()) but that of course doesn't help you.
You can try with some other disc...
Do you have a modchip installed?
Maybe try with: install_partitions = only_game
Good luck.

The main advantage that I see is that I can transfer files from my laptop to the Wii directly in the Windows Explorer, just drag and drop.

Don't have to deal with another program like WBFS Manager.
