Hardware Computer turns off by itself when it boots Vista/Ubuntu

I got a computer off my mums friend because she said it doesn't work and it turns off when I try to boot into Vista (For some reason it says Vista is installed twice so it goes to the bootloader menu).
Even when I try to live CD Ubuntu it turns off when it goes to load.

The computer stays on when it's at the BIOS menu and thats about it.
Any help before I send it off to some repair shop?

It's a emachine, I've Google'd abit and it looks like other people have this same problem. I've been told it's the fans, if it is that I'd rather send it off and pay £20 since I'm not good with hardware.

sound like it's either a corrupt or incompatible hardware driver or a corrupt file on the hard drive.
Try change Hard disk if you got a extra one.

It can't be anything on the hard drive since it doesn't even boot from live cd. It turns off once I choose the option to boot Ubuntu from the disc. I will try removing the hard drive though

I did a memtest just in case and no errors were found

The live Ubuntu on USB should load regardless of whether or not there's a corrupt file on the main hard drive since it's loading Ubuntu from an external source. I would say that the fan is possible problem because if the fan isn't working and the machine overheats it will likely turn it'self off to avoid damage.

Try the live USB on another computer. something may have gone wrong in the download/install to usb.

It's a CD and nothing has gone wrong since I used this a while back (ordered the disc from Ubuntu (9.10))

Just to say this again, it's not a software problem, it's hardware.

Can you feel if it is getting hot? It sounds to me like it could be heat related. Since you are booting from a cd it rules out software. You could verify the medium by re-burning a copy on a new disk, which would verify it is not the CD/OS. From there I would start unhooking pariphials one by one and see if the computer starts. If it is bad hardware this could fix it I would start with unhooking the HD, NICs, WiFi, Bluetooth, and extra usb ports if possible.

Your problem could also be the result of a power supply issue. Either a faulty psu or hardware that's pulling more electricity than it should. Try disconnecting any unnecessary part one by one.

Lol you people are hillarious. He said his vista was listed twice. His boot file obviously was somehow broken. I suggest you use a boot disk like Hirens or BartPE or somthing, and take a look at it.

easier way is if u try restoring the bootloader/mbr dl repair disk of vista, boot it and select repair, then select cmd dow type this
Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
Bootrec.exe /Fixboot

I'm going to suggest changing out the memory on the motherboard. While this doesn't explain the multiple instances of Vista, it might explain while Ubuntu isn't loading at all.

Before I get flamed for not noticing that he ran the memtest, I really did notice it. It just seems that he's done everything else to fix the problem except change the memory out.

As I said before, its hardware not software. I would of already tried fixing the bootloader but with also Ubuntu not loading, that rules the bootloader out.

I will try what boon and wshep said tomorrow when I'm at my house and post back results.

ok as i understand it ur comp is gettin stuck at the bios screen, this happened to me n this solution worked a treat me so give it a try, ya never know....

before switch on unplug power supply, hold Fn and f, while still holding re-insert power supply n switch on... Hope this helps

oh n BUNIE have u never heard of a twin load comp? its actually capable of holdin 2 O/S's.....
