Hello, here is the issue:

I have decided to backup all of my Wii and GameCube games to an external HDD (125 GB) and get them to play on my Wii U once I have Homebrew installed on it. Problem is I am having trouble installing my games on the HDD. I've tried USB Loader GX, WiiFlow, CleanRip, and tried to format it to FAT32 using either guiformat and/or Wii Backup Manager. I've even tried d2x cIOS installer, followed the instructions to the letter, and even that didn't work!

The problem is that it either freezes midway with USB Loader GX, stops midway with CleanRip, or doesn't work at all with WiiFlow. Only time it succeeded is when I formatted the HDD to WBFS format and it succeeded in ripping the Wii game (I used Super Mario Galaxy btw) to the HDD. Except I want to put my GameCube games in there as well and they won't work with WBFS format. I even tried to split partitions with one in WBFS format and the other in FAT32 format for my GameCube games. And when I tried to rip SMG, it froze up AGAIN!!! All I can say is I am using the newer version of Wii USB Loader GX and I am doing this on my regular Wii. Do you think I could have better luck on the Wii U??? I could use any and all help I could find. Thanks!

P.S. I tried syscheck on the Wii to offer a more detailed report, but THAT froze up also. SMH

Ok, I think I figured it all out. Here is what I did:

1. I first formatted the drive to wbps format using Wii Backup Loader.

2. At USB Loader GX, I set the game IOS to 250 and the Game Split option to 2 GB, then ripped Super Mario Galaxy and it was a success. Game worked with seemingly no problems.

3. I then formatted the drive to FAT32, using wbps2fat so that SMG wouldn't be deleted.

4. I used CleanRip to rip Super Mario Sunshine. It did it with no problems.

5. On the computer, I renamed the iso "game" and moved all the ripped files to a folder named "Super Mario Sunshine", then put that folder in a folder called "games" put on the root of the HDD.

6. Ran USB Loader GX and SMS showed up! Ran it and it works perfectly so far!

Took a lot of testing, and it was a bit of a hassle as this was a good-sized HDD with an AC adapter, but it all works now. It will be some time before I get my whole Wii/Gamecube library on HDD and test it all fully, but if I run into any problems, I will remember to post here!

Ok, update!

Something else I need to mention! When you set the game IOS to 250, set the loader IOS to 249. I had the loader set to 58 before and though I downloaded one game successfully, after that it then started freezing up everytime. But now that I set the loader IOS to 249, I am now installing Wii games at top speed! Hope this helps if anyone's having trouble!

freeze when dumping a game is usually a symptom of using a flash drive instead of a real external HDD.
if your USB device is a real HDD, then it's not compatible. if it's using an enclosure try another one.

Lot of flashdrives don't work with cIOS (249 or 250) and then using 58 is required. but it seems you have better stability when using cIOS.
If you found how to fix your issue I guess it's fine too.

I always wonder why people add "usbloadergx" in the threads title when the problem is not only in that loader.
it makes it feel like the loader is buggy and problematic, while it also doesn't work with all other homebrew.
