Yeah, someone mentioned that they might be able to have IOS36 updated to stop the stack smash. I didn't know that an IOS could be made to do that.

Should be doable. For Example they could add a check, so files on SD get checked for a specific signature when beeing executed.

haha, doubt nintendo will be reading GBATemp

Also it would be pretty low for them to delete crap from our SD cards without our consent. They kept the TP Hack from installing and deleted it from the NAND if found, but them screwing around with the files on the card itself would be dirty.

I would trick it with only inserting the SD card after I started the game. System Menu has no controls there and fails.
Good point. Never thought of that.

And the IOS thing. They can't stop brawl booting without new IOS, so as long as we dont update that IOS we're fine. That may still mean new people with fully updated wiis soon won't benefit, but i'm sure there'll be a workaround or something.

From what I vaguely understand, this should not be a problem because Nintendo never retroactively updates IOS files due to potential compatibility issues. I defer you to Marcan for the gruesome details:

So the best Nintendo can do is to re-release SSBB with that particular exploit fixed. However it would not be possible for them to fix existing flawed copies. It might be a good idea to go out and buy a copy of SSBB right now. It could become very expensive to find, similar to how on the Xbox, MechAssault and 007 became hot commodities due to their softmod capabilities.

They don't change big things in old IOSs however they have already done a few security fixes in old IOSs, like fixing the trucha bug or the undisclosed bug the last homebrewchannel installer used. This wouldn't be any different since such a code would be specific to brawls SD-reading.

It reminds me of the Phantasy Star Online exploit ofr Gamecube, i think the basics are the same...

I don't think so.

The PSO exploit on the GameCube was based on the GC actually requesting a program update from the PSO server. When the GC was configured to use a PC on the LAN as a DNS server, the PC returned its own IP as the address of the PSO server. The GC then requested the "program patch" from the PSO server (now actually your PC). Your PC responded by sending the .dol to the GC (with some other data) and the GC would execute it, thinking it was "patching" the PSO program code.

As far as I know there was no buffer/heap/stack overflow involved.

Of course someone may know better...

Brawl's still $50 even years after its release and it's still a hot seller (meaning supply is high as well), so I don't anticipate a drop in availability for it.

No, but new copies may be patched for this exploit was his point.

Then we just share the unfixed version we already have. As already mentioned, there are millions of vulnerable copies around.

I don't think so.
It's a bit too fast for a reaction on this exploit. It could explain it, but I expect it's more of a capacity problem. So all these stages, screenshots and replays might be hundrets of GB, if not already TB.

Probably 9.4, aka 4.7 x 2

But what does that have to do with the amount of stages, screenshots, and replays uploaded to Nintendo?

so we would never have to worry about nintendo releasing an update that kills this?

Yeah exactly how many GIGS can a double layer disc hold?
IIRC, it's 9.4GB.

8.5

As of June 30th, 2009, the current service that accepts user-generated snapshots, stage designs, and replay data will no longer be available. Please note, however, that we will continue to distribute such data after that date.

Think this might be related to the SmashHack?
That was posted a couple days before the exploit was publicly shown. Just a coincidence...
