Have you got a proper NAND backup?
Then you could flash it back with a hardmod.

    If I'm not mistaken...

What's the problem? If you tried updating with Luigi's Mansion, that implies you still have a functional console as it boots and works. Closing the lid on 2.1 with an n3ds isn't a guaranteed brick, just known to cause bricks sometimes and shouldn't be done.

    Between insane and insecure
Because you should never update a New3DS running 2.1. When it's running 2.1, it's basically emulating an old3DS and thus has no proper upgrade path from 2.1 to an OFW that supports the New3DS.
The only way to "property" upgrade is by restoring your NAND backup or CTRNAND transfer.
As for the OP, this is why you shouldn't panic and troubleshoot blindly. You should have avenge asked for help before taking risks like this. Maybe a hardmod will fix your system if you can't boot into it. But you will need a NAND backup

Bricks caused by shutting the lid on 2.1 are not salvageable with a hardmod.

Yeah, that's an MCU brick. There isn't anything you can do to save it. But you can get a n3ds xl motherboard on eBay for a pretty low price.
