So some screens have been released:

I don't like how it looks really to be honest. It just doesn't look like a Civilization game.

At 1830 ?

This Game is probably unbalanced as hell but let's not say this game bad till it's released.

Have you ever played Civilization? You start off pretty much bare stone age and eventually hit the Technological Ages. So if your opponent decides to expand instead of tech, and you decide to tech instead of expand. Then you'll have a technological advantage and the opponent will have an area advantage. It's all about balance, how well you plan ahead, and player-style.

Btw: I remember having a good game against someone that lasted over a week. Now that was Civilization (II).

yeah, I agree it must be unbalanced, I mean, in here the tank has 0 chances against the ninja, no one should mess with ninjas...

on a more serious note, I just found out about this heh, really neat, the ds needs more deep games like civ for it, the casuals got enough already...

I don't think I like the artwork for it though... could be different in motion, I hope there are pretty animated fight sequences, and some board effects.

The "big" console version alone fills me with dread. The developers themselves said that the game would be dumbed down and "simplified". Something along the lines of "adjusting for the gamepad as opposed to mouse/keyboard", but I think it's more along the line of "attracting casual gamers 'cuz there's more of them".

So if the "big" game is already "simplified", and portable console games are smaller, simplified versions as it is, I'm really skeptical of the DS version.

But on the other hand, it looks so good

Yeah well, I believe some simplification is actually necessary, especially for the DS, and of course the developers are not stupid, why aim for the hardcore audience when the casual is so much more abundant? so yeah it will be probably be very "dumbed down"
compared to the PC versions at least, but if they are able to keep the core gameplay intact it could work.

It's looks almost EXACTLY like the older 2D Civilizations, specifically Civ I & II excepting for the cheezy cartoony gfx as evidenced by the screenshot with the tank(bott left). I REALLY dislike that style of art, which can also be found in TF2, but TF2 has a whole host of other problems as well.

I agree, it does look like Civilization I for the PC. At least the units have hitpoints in this version, a minor flaw which wasn't present in the PC original. There are many dedicated Civilization fans across the world. To many, Sid Meier is a legend, not because he is a great game designer but because he revolutionised the genre, especially for the PC.

This game will hopefully appeal to young and adult gamers alike. I just hope Sid Meier has had some input into the creation of this game and is not just there for his name on the box.

Time will tell.. or shall I say 'The test of time' for you old timers out there.

I'm amazed that so few people here know about Civilization.

They're amazing games - you literally start off as a colony, you pick a ruler from different areas of the world (Ghandi is my personal favorite to play as), and you grow and you grow.. your civilization races to get major aspects of life like Religion, Slavery, things like that.

Civilization 4 is amazing, but I am warning you, one game is like 8 hours, and that's before you start tweaking everything and you wind up spending days upon days on one game because the AI is insane.

You win the game by taking over the other civilizations on the world, or making it to Outer Space. There's tons of ways to win.

awesome, fire emblem through to advanced wars with a little anno thrown in.

i like the look.
Well, the PC versions were an empire building type of game.

You started with a group of settlers and one or two warrior type units. You used the settlers to establish a city, which then could build city buildings, settlers(can also make roads and things), and warrior type units. New settler units could be moved to create more cities, build roads(faster movement, also rail later), improve terrain, etc.

Each city dependent upon where it was built would provide a certain number of resources, gold, food, etc.

There was also a research component in which you got X number of research points per turn, pick a technology from a technology tree, and after hitting the number of points for that tech, you got it which could unlock other city buildings, warrior units, improvements, gold production increase, knowledge production increase etc.

There were also trader units so that you could set up trade between your cities and and other player's cities.

Additionally, there were also the wonder improvements that you could build that would give various improvements.

The goal was varied, either conquering the entire world, having the most "points" at the end of X turns, largest empire, etc.

Not sure what or how it will be implemented for the DS though.

A not very correct version of warrior type improvements would go:
warrior -> phalanx -> man at arms -> musketeer -> infantry -> mechanized infantry
scout -> cavalry -> knight -> dragoon -> tank
There were more units in there and they did not ALL depend upon prior units, but I really don't recall the exact progression but that should give you an idea.

I should also mention that units included water units as well ranging from fishing ships, trading vessels, to battleships and aircraft carriers IIRC.

In later stages of the game there are also aircraft units.

There should be a wikipedia entry for this game series if you really want more/better descriptions of the game.

This looks like a pretty sweet game. Sure, it may not be the same as the rest of the other Civilization titles, but it looks pretty good as it is
