So I am new to the Gateway scene and have been reading a lot of the information that has been posted about the functions of the Gateway. I was wondering can installed .cia files be played online or do you need to have a .3dz on the gateway itself?

Ok so I can download a .3ds and inject my header into them and then convert them to .cia and they will play online?

It all depends on preference, cia take up double the space but they install to the big sd card and can be used with savedata tool, 3ds / 3dz require a header to play online and install to the micro sd card. No way is better than another, just all about preferance

Cias do not take double the space. In fact they are smaller than untrimmed roms

Ronhero is referring to the fact that you need twice the .cia size for installation, but you can safely delete the .cia once they're imported, so it's only temporary.

Can you trim cia roms too? And what size microSD would I need for Gateway, just 2gb?

I doubt you can trim .cia files, but you can probably trim .3ds/.3dz files then convert them to .cia. Whether or not that'll work, though, I don't know.
Cias are already the smallest they can be.
The reason roms can be trimmed is because cartridges have fixed sizes (1 gbit, 2, 4, 8 etc)
Cias are just archives, like zip files.

Ah, I didn't know that. I just installed BBM on my 3DS yesterday, so I'm not overly familiar with .cia. Thanks for the info.
