Doesn't matter. Whichever one you buy you'll love it so much that you'll go out and buy the other one

Also recommend playing Aria of Sorrow before DoS. It's not nessasary, they explain the gist of the major plot points anyway but some things make a bit more sense when you've played the prequel.

Dawn of Sorrow is incredible, I liked it a bit more than Portrait of Ruin but you might enjoy Dawn of Sorrow a bit more if you play Aria of Sorrow first (though it doesn't really matter except for a few plot points here and there).

It's 2 different games, not 2 versions of the same game.  Start with Dawn of Sorrow, it came out first.  Actually, start with Aria of Sorrow on the GBA, then Dawn of Sorrow.  They are 2 parts of a story arc.  Portrait of Ruin isn't in the same story arc.

Agreed, thats the best choice. I haven't played Protrait even thou my original cart is resting there getting dust.
I wanna finish Bloodlines (Genesis, emulated on PSP) first.

The Castleroids are all great games. Play them in the order Aria, Dawn, Portrait. And if you have the chance play Symphony of the night

A lot of people here seem to think DOS was boring. I had it the other way round. The repeating and often boring atmosphere of POR combined with the more lineair play made that it took a while before I picked the game up enough to finish it. I think DOS is the superior of DOS storywise, graphicwise, level design wise and soundwise. But I'm biased. Soma

edit: I just realized there is one thing that makes POR worth it though:

the double bossfight with dracula and death? OMGZ!

Oh..my gosh. I just wanted to update guys. Today I got Dawn of Sorrow first [plan to get PoR after], and it is THE BEST DS game I own, right next to Pokemon Diamond. OH MY GOSH! It's freaking awesome!

I used to own Castlevania on the PS1, and I loved it..and some monsters in this game are back! It's amazing! Well, just wanted to let you guys know..thanks

I played the game for like an hour yesterday, saved..and closed it like 2-3 seconds after it saved. Today I opened the game to play again..and the save file was GONE. It didn't record anything! I'm guessing I corrupted it on my own..but I was so pissed off I didn't play :'[
I'm just gonna take a few days off before I go back..but still, great game

i'm surprised to see that many people prefer PoR to DoS. DoS is a much deeper game in my opinion, but both are very good and both bring back fond memories of older castlevania games. I've beat every CV games at every difficulty and every modes, and i can honestly say that the only CV game to rival SotN is DoS.
