Gaming Castlevania

Well, gonna start playing a Castlevania game because everyone is raving about how great they are, and I wanna check it out. Question is though, which version is the better one?
I honestly have no idea why there's 2 versions of the same game..but if you guys would please inform me, I'd appreciate it :]

Portrait of Ruin. I liked both games, but if I had to choose one, it'd be Portrait of Ruin.

It's 2 different games, not 2 versions of the same game. Start with Dawn of Sorrow, it came out first. Actually, start with Aria of Sorrow on the GBA, then Dawn of Sorrow. They are 2 parts of a story arc. Portrait of Ruin isn't in the same story arc.

While Portrait of Ruin was very good, I enjoyed Dawn of Sorrow even more. Easily my favourite DS game.
Aria of Sorrow is also amazing.

Can't wait for new DS castlevania.

Start with Portrait of Ruins, because Dawn of Sorrow if the next part of the story after the GBA one : Aria of Sorrow

play Aria before Dawn

They're two completely different games.
They just borrow the same aspects. DoS uses a "Soul" System, while in PoR, you master Skills and Sub-weapons.

I say you should play Portrait of Ruin. That game kicks major arse.

One thing that bothers me though is they recycled some sprites from the old SNES CV and the maps are reused twice.

finished DoS, played like 2hours of PoR, love both to death.

PoR was good with the 2-character action and a longer game, but I actually liked DoS more.....the bosses were MUCH more impressive to behold.

PoR is just better _GAME_. 2 chars 2 transforms, a lot of action(if compare to dos), better balanse etc.

But design of DoS... DoS is better _castlevania_. It plays like good gothic roman, while PoR is just kiddy fantasy...

I tried twice to play through Dawn of Sorrow, and both times I got bored with it and quit half way through. Portrait of Ruin was awesome though.

DOS is a little closer to SOTN than POR, but POR has some good battles. I would stick with DOS.
