I was at Linens n' Things for because they are going out of business. I looked for a cast iron pan to put the moltin cans into and make them into blocks and I saw the PERFECT one, but it is made of "cast aluminum" or "heavy aluminum" so would that work?

Google turns up nothing on the subject.

Melting down aluminum in an aluminum pan just doesn't sound like it would work, no matter whether it's a "heavy" aluminum.
Worst case scenario: You melt the pan too.
Best case scenario: The melted down aluminum would likely meld with the pan.

It seems to me that what you need is a "crucible".

I will MELT the cans in a paint can (steel).

I will pour the melted cans into the "heavy aluminum" pan.

Don't melt aluminum in cast aluminum. Cast aluminum has a higher melting point but you're more likely to weld the two together. also, what the heck are you planning on using as a heat source to melt aluminum cans?

EDIT:

I strongly encourage you not to do this.

Ah. I misunderstood.

o.O It might be possible, but the pan needs to be coated with something to keep the molten aluminum from sticking. Teflon might be sufficient, but it would have to be a thick layer.

Dunno what to tell you, beyond that, apart from Good Luck, and Be Careful.
