be careful about what you do. Even though it's all in good flattery and fun, you are remaking a paid for game for free, essentially opening a gateway for people to pirate the game. If i were you, i'd take this engine and make a new adventure out of it, so this doesn't end up like fnaf on petit comupter with a cease and desist from the devs. You can keep everything you've done, just dont remake the enture game exactly. Maybe new people, new mechanics, anything.

Considering this statated as a fan project and, it's a fan project of an indie game; I seriously doubt that he'd get into legal trouble.

It's not like doing a fan game of a nintendo or disney ip or anything.

If you want an example, look at the guys who made no mario's sky. They got dmca'd, so they changed it into no dmca's sky. It's just a creative way to make something unique.

That's still considered copyright infringement as it's using assets from the game.
