Could be fragged to much (the microSD card) and is having trouble reading some times, try running a refrag on it and or format it after backing everything up.

Try to leave a few megs of space free on your card. I once stuffed as much as possible on my MicroSD, but it froze a lot. I always try to keep at least 10 MB of space free, it hasn't been freezing anymore.

When it "dies" and you turn the DS off and on does it act like there's no game in the DS? If so it sounds like the pins are losing contact. Fix it by wiggling it round in the slot or by sticking a bit of roach-thickness paper to the front of your R4 unit to make it a snugger fit.

It can, it is a cheaply made product.  However sometimes it depends what SD card you are using, if it is Japan or Taiwan.  In certain games it'll freeze if it is taiwan.  Also SD cards sometimes ship defective, I have on mini-SD at work that makes anything lock up that it is inserted in.

Just because it's cheaply made doesn't mean it'll die on it's own.

I'll restate it again. Get a new MicroSD.

(It will help if you tell me which MicroSD you're using)

I've seen it happen before. Plus the maximum component lifespan on solid state components is roughly 35 years, so within 35 years from now it won't work any more anyway.
