Gaming Can I play multiplayer on minecraft alpha?

Me and a couple of my friends have minecraft alpha. 12.2.
There is a multiplayer option on the menu, so can we use it like a private server. If the private server change is not possible is there any other servers that me and my friends could join?

You all need to have a Minecraft account to connect (unless piracy has got the better (I'm not keeping up to date on Minecraft news so it might of changed))
