I just got a DSTWO and was wondering if ROMs need to be .NDS files or if I can compress them into either a .zip or a .rar file. or is there is a program like wii scrubber to remove unneeded data

Most of the time trimming doesn't affect a rom, but on some games you may run into problems with multiplayer.

how about GS:DD?
Just rim it yourself, it's not really a hard process. If you don't want to trim it because you fear you'll lose your rom in the process, then don't fret, most trimmer leave a backup of the original rom (I can assure you NDS Tokyo Trimmer does). As Rydian said before, the amount of junk that's trimmed off depends on the rom; I know Pokemon White got a good 50MB off.

1 - 100MB.

Depends entirely on the game.
1-127MB actually... this is of course pending a 129MB game taking up a 256MB chunk. Btw, "NDS ROM Trimmer" is a really good ROM trimming application for anyone on a Mac (works with both Intel and PPC based Macs.)

When trimming a rom that you intend to use on a DSTWO, do you know if it is required to run the rom in "patched" mode or will it still work in "clean" mode?

I mean as far as I know, patching and trimming are two different things so I just wanted to be clear.

Well if you want to get technical there's 512MB games out too.

Ninokuni: Shikkoku no Madoushi is rumored to be 512 MB, but it's not scheduled for release until 12/09/2010 in Japan only. I can't think of any DS roms that are currently this size untrimmed.
