As I read, that hekate can only restore nand backups from exfat, I was just wondering if hekate can access exfat formatted sd cards even if the switch has no exfat update.
It should or am I thinking wrong?

It can yes, for example when you perform a NAND backup using an exFAT formatted card it is able to dump a full backup regardless of whether you have the Horizon update.

Yes, it actually got me into trouble when I was using an exfat card but didn't have the exfat driver installed in horizon. It kinda makes booting CFW hard.

Yes, I learn this the hard way. I backup NAND using hekate with exfat microsd. When I load SXOS, it can't use the microsd. Then I have to boot back to Horizon and install the missing update. I don't really care about ban anymore. Backing up Nand is pita.
