My father said I can buy a new computer so yeah, I've been looking around for a computer. The HP, Dell, etc. computers that I found around here are worthless so I decided that I'll make one myself. But my father's against that so I decided I'll let a computer store build it for me and I think my father will agree to that. This shop is doing that so can you guys pick out the parts for me? My budget is about $800. Here's the website. The prices are in Sri Lankan Rupees

What do you need the computer for? What specs do you currently have? Any parts you want to move over, or all fresh? What size monitor do you have?

And do you need a new copy of Windows?

I need the computer for gaming, I don't game at Ultra settings though, mediocre graphics should do it for me. I would like to play CoD, Need for Speed, Fifa, WoW, TF2, Assassins Crees, etc. I have an HP desktop with a Core 2 Duo 3 Ghz processor, and 2 GB ram. It doesn't have a graphics card, and it has the basics like a DVD drive, hard drive etc. I don't want to move over anything, except maybe the DVD drive and some files, and start afresh. I'd like to buy a new monitor as well.
I'd like a new copy of windows as well, should I get 7 or 8?

The only thing I would mention is to remember the price of having someone else build your computer for you. As long as your father's willing to cover that cost, it should be fine. Another thing to keep in mind though is whether the people putting your computer together will offer support with it should something go wrong after they put it together. Wouldn't be any fun for you or your father to have to pay them again to check out a potential problem down the line...

Ok, playing with the options in that site, I came up with the following build:

Windows 7: 18,300 rupees.

KIT PRICE: 86980.00
The Items of the kit are shown below
ProcessorsIntel - 3.30ghz Core I3-3220 3mb(3y)
MotherboardsMotherboard - Gigabyte G41m-Es2l(3y)
RamRam - 4gb (Ddr3) Kvr1333 Kingston ( 3y)
V G A CardsVga Card-Asus Geforce Gt640 2gb Ddr3(1y)
Internal Hard DiskHard Disk - Samsung 1000gb Sata 32m (1y)
Optical DriversDvd Writer - Samsung 22x Blk Sata (1y)
Led MonitorsMonitor-Samsung 23"Led B370h Hd/Hdmi(3y)
CasingCasing -Megabox 8803mini Bk/Sl Logo(1y)
KeyboardsKeyboard-Megabox Kbs-720 Usb Black(6m)
Mouse & Mouse PadMouse-Megabox Op-620d Usb Blk(6m)

I will add, this is not necessarily the best possible build. I just picked compatible parts and the cheapest case, and opted for a bigger monitor instead of a stronger graphics card. Based on a google currency calculator, it should total up exactly $800.

Thank you so much Originality for your help, I just converted the price and Google shows that it is $660. I'm sorry to trouble you again but could you suggest which parts I could improve with that $140?

On second thought, could you suggest a better graphic card instead of that monitor, because I don't need such a big one. Thanks in advance :)

Ok, I noticed one small mistake in my first build. The motherboard I picked was Socket 775, so I swapped it to a H77 motherboard and downsized the HDD slightly. Downsizing the monitor let me pick a graphics card one up in the range, although any higher and another 20,000 rupees is needed.

KIT PRICE: 86380.00
The Items of the kit are shown below
Processors Intel - 3.30ghz Core I3-3220 3mb(3y)
Motherboards Motherboard-Intel Dh77kc I7(2y)
Ram Ram - 4gb (Ddr3) Kvr1333 Kingston ( 3y)
V G A Cards Vga Card-Asus Geforce Gtx650 1gb Ddr5(1y
Internal Hard Disk Hard Disk - Samsung 750gb Sata (2y)
Optical Drivers Dvd Writer - Samsung 22x Blk Sata (1y)
Led Monitors Monitor-Viewsonic 18.5" Va1911a-Led(3y)
Casing Casing -Megabox 8803mini Bk/Sl Logo(1y)
Keyboards Keyboard-Megabox Kbs-720 Usb Black(6m)
Mouse & Mouse Pad Mouse-Megabox Op-620d Usb Blk(6m)
And don't forget Windows.

so AMD seem to finally be starting to take AI seriously

Oh yeah those new 8000 CPUs have AI cores built in that's interesting

i think i heard of that, it's a good idea, shouldn't need a dedicated GPU just to run a LLM or video upscaling
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the nvidia shield tv has AI video upscaling
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
LLMs can be run on cpu anyway but it's quite slow

I had a girlfriend who had a twin sister and they would mess with me constantly.... Until one chipped a tooth then finally I could tell them apart.... Lol

@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i don't think nvidia wants to get in the x64 cpu market anyways
