Hey guys today my Japanese N3DS Non XL came.
It came with firmware 8.1 so I had no entry point. I had to update to 10.3 to get the browser to work. I installed menuhax and was getting prepared to downgrade back to 9.2 with sysUpdater. Now the first 100 times I tried sysUpdater, it failed on arm11 kernel exploit step #5 or sometimes #7. I fixed this by replacing boot.3dsx with sysUpdater. I then tried to downgrade but it turns out some of my CIAs in updates were corrupt. I got a error getting CIA info and it looked like it changed nothing to my system. I then fixed the update CIAs and was preparing to downgrade. My 3ds wouldn't boot. Black screen. No message. I tried to do a firmware update in recovery mode, it just finished but had no effect. Tried booting with SD card out I thought maybe it was menuhax. Still nothing. Now I want to kill myself becuase in less than 24 hours I've broke it.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Sounds like you were using the older version of sysUpdater. Though I know the CIA installed failed is because of incorrect CIA's. Though try recovery again.

Sorry for your loss if not :(

It's a pricey set-back sure, but I wouldn't get too mad over it. Things are replaceable.

Did you remove the one cia file you need to for the Japanese version?

Have you tried recovery mode?

Yes I removed the one CIA file but the CIAs never installed so that didn't matter.

I tried to do a firmware update in recovery mode, it just finished but had no effect. Tried booting with SD card out I thought maybe it was menuhax. Still nothing. Now I want to kill myself becuase I just it in less than 24 hours I've broke it.

I was using the latest version :/

I know it worked for one unit, but did you try doing a 2nd recovery update? If that doesn't work, my guess is maybe the NAND is borked.

Edit: The version I used for SysUpdater didn't have the whole 1.2.3.4... process.

you had an entry point. my 7.2 3DS had an entry point (web browser), how can 8.1 not have an entry point?

8.1 has no internet browser installed. So browser based hacks don't work. You'd need a GW to accomplish anything - or copies of OOT/CN

From what i understand about the title of this topic, I thought that it bricked for no reason but then you said that you downgraded and bricked. You should've known the risk, didnt people say that the latest update of sysupdater just softbricks?

how does gateway alone let you install hax? I understand oot and CN but how does the gateway only work? I highly doubt the nds would read the gateway cartridge just like that.

Gw has the only public 8.1 rop and it was changed in 9.0. Currently the only way out of 8.1 is updated to 9.3+ and downgrade or use a nus private server

The working public entry points for 8.1j are as follows

Cn - gw / ntr
Oot - gw

I'm hoping you did a nand backup with gw.

I'm afraid not as the OP didn't use any exploit until updated it to 10.3. If recovery mode is also broken then no luck at all... but I highly suggest to give a recovery mode another try using another formatted (in FAT32) console sd card.

If by luck it does work then stay at 10.3 and don't downgrade. Wait until GW comes with their 10.3 launcher or downgrader, so that at least you can make a NAND backup first.

Thanks for the help & ideas everyone :) Nothing seemed to work though. I've used recovery mode 4 times and still doesn't boot. I'm going to see if I can get it exchanged.
