I could never find a 3DS rom website which didn't look dodgy so i thought it would be better to actually make the rom myself using the BrainDump homebrew software. I tested it with Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and BrainDump worked great till i tried to use it on Citra. It said that the game still needed to be decrypted using a real 3DS. When i googled it most solutions required GodMode9 ( i think that it's name) where as I'm only using Cubic Ninja to get homebrew, and other methods were for .CIA files but mine is a .CXI FILE so is there a solution which works for .CXI files and doesn't require me downloading CFW?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out ;)

Use godmode9 to generate a .3ds file
He said he doesn't want to download cfw.

I'm fairly sure braindump's cxis are decrypted. Maybe try redumping it? I'm not sure if this is actually a thing, but maybe the newer citra versions need a better header than the false one from braindump or something? Try an ancient version of citra.

Braindump does not make complete 1:1 copies of the game. I doubt user will get citra working with these dumps. The only reliable way to dump/decrypt game roms is to use a tool with ARM9 access. Such as Godmode9.

Btw if youre on a firmware with an ARM9 kernel exploit you can do this without installing CFW. But im guessing youre also on the latest OFW?

out of curiosity, why are you against installing cfw?
I have nothing against it really its just people make it sound like this big scary thing which could brick your 3DS if you install it wrong but i guess ill have to man up and get a flash card and just hope i don't destroy my 3DS :P

Thanks for all your replies guy, helped a lot :)

You shouldn't be scared of cfw. These stigmas are super old, and pretty much everything's changed since then. First of all, bricks have been brought down to zero percent, due to the bootrom exploit having an insane number of recovery options. Secondly, you don't need to own a flashcart anymore to mod your console. Now you just need to own a compatible dsiware game (usually Sudoku for $2) and friend a person online who already has cfw (me) and have them send you a file. Lastly, and this is the one that takes the most time to explain, cfw isn't a thing that completely changes the way your 3ds behaves; it's relatively simple. Cfw is really just a launcher installed to the bootrom that looks for "boot.firm" on the ad card when it boots up. Boot.firm just applies a few patches to the os, mainly signature checks that let unsigned .CIA files (pirated games or Homebrew) be installed. Other then that, a cfw 3ds is identical to a regular 3ds. If you want more information about exactly what a cfw is and how it's completely harmless, you could read this:
I'm going to say this now so I can copy and paste this into other threads to explain exactly what a cfw is:
Basically, a cfw (Custom FirmWare), is several patches applied to the 3ds OS launched via some sort of exploit (in most cases b9s). These patches range from signature patches (allowing for the installation of CIA files with invalid tickets) to the Rosalina system module that pops up when L+DOWN+SELECT are held. Otherwise, there is no difference between a regular vanilla 3ds and a 3ds with a cfw launcher installed (as a cfw is never really installed. What is really being installed is something that launches a cfw. That's why godmode9 and other payloads can be loaded too). This means that the 3ds can be updated as normal, with no need to worry about losing games or saves. Updating functions just like normal. The same goes for updating games, which is discussed in detail later. In fact, you could install b9s (boot9strap) and use your 3ds like a completely normal 3ds, and there would be absolutely zero difference between that 3ds and a regular vanilla one. The only way to tell would be to send it in to Nintendo.
Due to a lack of account system on the 3ds at launch (Nintendo network IDs were shoehorned in later, and thus don't function quite right), all 3ds games acquired illegitimately (CIA files) function identically to games that were purchased and installed through legitimate means. This means that pirated games can be updated and played online just like normal games. The only exception to this is if the game is from a different region then the 3ds itself. Those games muse be updated via a dumped update CIA file, which are easy to come by.
Lastly there comes the fear of being banned from Nintendo's online services, which for the most part has been blown out of proportion. As stated earlier, a cfw 3ds is no different then a regular 3ds aside from a few patches here and there. This makes it 100 percent impossible for Nintendo to detect a console running a cfw, and thus impossible to ban. Even running games invested via a cia file online are guaranteed to work fine online. Now this isn't to say that bans are impossible to come by. Many cfw users have been banned for unknown reasons. Though not much is known about these bans, there are several things that are known. 1: it is not caused by running a cfw or using pirated games. 2: users who do not use CIA Homebrew apps and instead use Rosalina 3dsx loading have been shown to be unbanned. 3: cheating online or playing leaked roms before they have been released will 100 percent result in a ban. From these clues, it can be concluded that people who simply use Rosalina to load 3dsx Homebrew instead of using custom Homebrew CIA files are nearly guaranteed to be safe from any future banwaves.
Again this might be a bit long to read, but I wanted to get this info out there, and so I would never have to bring this up ever again. People are free to quote this in their own posts if they feel this gets a good point across. I might update this post for updated information and/or spelling corrections. This was typed in the middle of the night on mobile so spelling mistakes are bound to be abundant.

CFW used to be a scary, brick-prone mess with Arm9LoaderHax, but nobody installs that anymore & it's really easy to switch to Boot9Strap. Anything bad you've heard about CFW is probably from A9LH. You can even save a bricked 3DS as long as you have a NAND backup & working B9S.
