Hello there.
I have been modding my Wii for a good number of years now, so I don't consider myself to be a noob.

Problem: I am currently trying to load a properly formatted external USB Hard Drive onto a Black Wii (running 4.3U). I also have a soft modded White Wii, which works perfectly fine with both of my Hard Drives. I am working with 2 separate hard drives here - One is a SATA and one is an IDE, and they are inside of generic, USB-powered enclosures, respectively. Both Hard Drives load up perfectly on my White Wii with USB Loader GX 3.0. The Black Wii does not load them at all.

I have noticed a strange issue with the ports in which I plug it into. For the White Wii, I have always plugged the Hard Drive into Port 0 (the port nearest to the edge) without plugging in the 2nd USB plug. With the Black Wii, however, I noticed that the light on the Hard Drive enclosures will not come on unless it is plugged into the 2nd, "inside" USB Port (Port 1). This tells me that the USB Drives draw more power from 1 port than the other. Am I correct on this? Despite this, when I try loading these Hard Drives with USB Loader GX they will just not load. I am running CIOS250. I have hacked the Black Wii as fully and as correctly as I possibly can. I used Multi Mod Manager to install the IOS's, and followed all the tutorials to the letter. I have even tried switching apps such as using Configurable USB Loader instead - all to no avail - they will not load the Hard Drives.

I have no idea what is so different about the Black Wii than the White Wii (beyond Wii system software, and the disc drive's firmware), but there is clearly some kind of difference in regards to these USB ports.

I do not know what else I can do.

I would not have created a new thread here if I had not completely exhausted all my options. I leave the rest to you guys. Thank you all so much.

Update: Here is my Black Wii's Status after running syscheck (awesome app!!): http://syscheck.softwii.de/oX9nFit4
And to compare, here is my White Wii's Status from syscheck: http://syscheck.softwii.de/ENDw1IjX

No idea what is wrong. Again - I feel something is different about the hardware since the USB drives turn on (light comes on) when I plug it into Port 1 instead of Port 0.

EDIT 2: OMG! FINALLY GOT IT WORKING!!! USB Loader GX has an AWESOME feature that allows you to load hard drives from Port 1 instead of Port 0! It is located in the "settings" section (the gears icon) under Hard Drive Settings. You first have to make sure that the pre-loaded CIOS is 222. You do that in the Loader Settings under Boot/Standard. Of course you have to make sure 222 is installed first, but then all you have to do is type in 222.

Run USB Loader GX WITHOUT the HD plugged in. Then when it says "Mounting from Port 1" plug it into Port 1. Works like a charm!

Not sure about the Black Wii w/out GC ports.
In USB loader GX, you have to make sure you're telling it to load from IOS 222 in the Loader Settings under Boot/Standard. You also have to tell it to load from Port 1.
Start USBLoader GX WITHOUT the HD plugged in.
When you see this screen, THEN plug in the Hard Drive into PORT 1 (left port).
Everything else looks fine. That's all the advice I can give you; this worked with a GC-compatible wii - I don't know if the other non-Gamecube type of Wii is any different, sorry!

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
