Bethesda debuts 15 minutes of Starfield gameplay

One of Bethesda's most anticipated titles just got a major gameplay reveal. 15 minutes of gameplay was shown off at the Xbox Games Showcase, with Todd Howard explaining that this is footage from early on in the game. It starts with you getting out of your spaceship and exploring a new planet called Kreet. There's fights against space pirates, and a few weapon types shown. As is Bethesda tradition, there's a lockpicking minigame. There's a character creator, where you can customize your character's looks and story background. There's base building, like Fallout 4. You can also build your own spaceships using specific parts, with your own crew you can pick.

Flying the ship is also a part of the game. You'll use it to fly through space, avoid asteroids, and shoot down foes. Todd gives a look at how you can land anywhere on a planet, and each planet has its own specifications like temperature, gravity, types of flora and fauna, and other details. It starts with one solar system, but there are hundreds of solar systems, and over 1,000 planets to explore.

Honestly looks better than I expected it to, lots of comparisons to NMS but it looks more focused than that with only a thousand planets. So more like NMS meets The Outer Worlds. I can still see a fair amount of performance issues and signature Bethesda jank just under the surface though, so I'll be sure to wait on reviews to get a more complete picture.

Standout of this gameplay was probably the ship combat and customization. Almost Freelancer-esque, but with more weight to every action.

I wish they would announce Skyrim 2 or whatever. I bought three years of Gamepass at once and it'll expire before the next Scrolls game comes out.

I know it's too early, but am I the only one who felt it was a generic af? felt like a better looking NMS.
The thing is it has all these large cities and factions, so it seems like it can be a lot more mission/story driven if you want it to be. If you just go randomly exploring, yeah, you're likely to find a lot of emptiness between points of interest. Overall I'd say it has potential if nothing else. Bethesda games are usually quite rough at launch before being patched/modded.

Ye I agree. The trailer was lackluster and felt like a reskin of fallout. The larva and scorpions at the start, followed by the mediocre combat mid trailer as well as the crafting/building system.
Maybe I just had too high expectations but after seeing the trailer I felt like No Man's Sky being the superior game, especially seeing it having multiplayer making the base building part a lot more meaningful.

I don't mind a clunky sword swing but as much as footage says anything (proof in the pudding and all that) then that looked like clunky gunplay (something fallout has historically not done too well with either) which I am less inclined to forgive in a game like this.

Isn't it a bit early to be thinking about a Starship Troopers total conversion?

Not sure what you mean there - I was referring to how buggy Skyrim STILL is, and was all the way back when it was new. "Bugthesda", as I've heard before, so I'm wondering just how many issues Starfield will have. Is it still using the same, decrepit Creation Engine, or have they switched to something far more updated like Unity?

I am quite aware of Bethesda's history with this sort of thing and have long advocated for the "buy the game of the year edition/gold edition a year later" approach to their games.

As far as Starship Troopers

It looks good and thorough, but I think I'd eventually get bored. I've been replaying Mass Effect, which was a favourite when I was a teen, and it doesn't hold up in any department. The only time I finished a Bethesda RPG was Fallout 3, and I haven't played one in ten years. I have No Man's Sky and never want to play it. I wonder why I was expecting Starfield, because it's not my type of game.

I'm one of those sickos that liked the gummi ship building in KH1, the ship building gameplay really makes the game for me and makes bearable the crappy looking gunplay and ugly faces
My mind went to the same place when they showed the ship building. Man, that gummi ship was fucking great. I spent so much time pointlessly customizing it.

Unfortunately, the ships in this video looked ugly AF (unlike the glorious gummi ship). I wonder how extensive the customization will be, and if you can build one that doesn't look like a frankenstein built in a junkyard?

I am interested but also will be keeping a critical eye on this upon release. After all, this still is Bethesda.
Oh yes indeed it is still Bethesda. Though, thankfully, Emil is no longer in the picture when it comes to the design or dev team, ditto for maybe a couple of other people as well. Given how much content they cut from the final retail build of Fallout 4 (base game) removed hand to hand in Skyrim as well as mysticism. I still remember how much they fucked up Fallout 76 at launch. Truly unfinished. I hope that during the wait for the official release of this game, Todd gets the pink slip.
