Bethesda debuts 15 minutes of Starfield gameplay

One of Bethesda's most anticipated titles just got a major gameplay reveal. 15 minutes of gameplay was shown off at the Xbox Games Showcase, with Todd Howard explaining that this is footage from early on in the game. It starts with you getting out of your spaceship and exploring a new planet called Kreet. There's fights against space pirates, and a few weapon types shown. As is Bethesda tradition, there's a lockpicking minigame. There's a character creator, where you can customize your character's looks and story background. There's base building, like Fallout 4. You can also build your own spaceships using specific parts, with your own crew you can pick.

Flying the ship is also a part of the game. You'll use it to fly through space, avoid asteroids, and shoot down foes. Todd gives a look at how you can land anywhere on a planet, and each planet has its own specifications like temperature, gravity, types of flora and fauna, and other details. It starts with one solar system, but there are hundreds of solar systems, and over 1,000 planets to explore.

Looks really interesting

A little bit hesitant that the scope of this title may lead to empty or barren areas with over 1000 planets

But thinking more on it, as far as we have learned in real life most planets are likely uninhabitable giant rocks or gaseous wastelands - as long as they keep it to 15-30 actual planets with hub cities I think it can be done well with a fair amount of actual design and interesting fully fleshed out locales

Of course this game isn't going to magically contain infinite content, it will still likely be about the same scope as Skyrim or Fallout 4 - but with optional empty ice planets to explore

Well, lots of planets will surely repeat some qualities, as there's only a few planet types known.

With some pseudo random generation, and their quest engine, I'm sure the content won't be lacking.

Now, how they will manage the planet life, and quest variety will be immensely interesting to me.

I have hopes for this one.

So you can only play as a human? No different races, with unique storylines, nothing?
What about factions, guilds and the like to join?
They also didn't mention anything about a morality or choice system.
I think they should've added something to the FPS style combat, like the VATS system or something new, so it can stand out from the crowd..
Though visually it looks good. Reminds of Mass Effect, in fact there's a lot of similarities between the two.. I hope it delivers!

They mentioned at least 2 factions - I am sure you can join the pirates at some point

They didn't mention any choice system by name, but he does mention the game is determined by our choices

Being a BGS game there would be a riot if it didn't bring back everything we know and love from their past blockbusters

2 factions is not enough. Unless there's some reason for it story-wise.. But honestly, i think there should be more, it's such a waste for a game this big.

Yea it was subtle. We'll see how it turns out i guess.

I hope you're right.

Skipped through the trailer because its likely 90% fake footage. Looks like no mans sky but with a HD reskin and likely a lot of insidious micro transactions. If its good I will buy it a year after release when its been patched, I am betting it will be bug ridden to hell on launch plus I dont trust Bethesda at all.

It genuinely looks pretty amazing. Though I can't be the only one that noticed how it seems to have taken more than a few nods from what No Man's Sky has done in it's time available. Kinda makes that game all the more fascinating, it launched as a joke, and slowly redeemed itself, and now it would appear AAA titles are taking notes from what they have done well in their game.

That is one boring-looking game that proves that Hello Games had the right idea for NMS's visual style. Seems like no one really had much of an idea for Starfield, in general. Just... the Bethesda usual, with some NMS cribbing.

I'll probably play it on my fridge in 2054, on its fifth re-release.

I haven't played NMS, but I have played Space Engineers, and I see a few familiar bits when it comes to the ships.
But hey, if I can be a space cowboy gunslinger, then I'm happy. Also see dna from Fallout and stuff, which is nice. Still looking forward to it. Hopefully the delays make it better.

This trailer very much felt like an amalgation of Elite, Fallout 4, No Mans Sky, a dash of Space Engineer, and some Elex. I remain cautiously optimistic that it'll be decent, though I hope there will be more to do on any given planet than just a few handful quests and then on to the next planet.

I'm curious about how they plan on handling the planets, obviously they're not going to be able to store a 1000 planet's 1:1 into the game's data files, so I'd assume they're procedurally generated outside of points of interests. Makes me wonder if smaller installations will also sometimes pop up being generated or if they just have fixed points of interest for their radiant quest "dungeons".

Bethesda is incapable of populating the area of one state with enough things to do, I don’t know how they expect to populate 1000 planets. I fully understand that AAA games need to increase in scale over time, but come on now. Do one star system *well* and that’s plenty. Hate to judge before I play, but there’s just no way they meet expectations with this amount of real estate to cover.
