so I originally played the GBA version, which was a port of the original on SFC, and I liked it a lot (even though it was apparently poorly received due to shitty voice acting and lacky gameplay, things I barely noticed myself). now, I was wondering, with the myriad of the different versions (SFC original, PSX remake, PSP port of the remake and complete PSP remake) would be best to play on PSP. I think there's translation patches for all of them (at least the SFC and PSX version), so that's not really a concern.

thanks,
Wang

Last one: the Phantasia version included in the Narikiri Dungeon X compilation.
It has full voice acting, and was used by Namco for their recently released in English iOS port.

No, that was the the FVE version.
But yes I agree that Tales of Phantasia X is the best way to play Tales of Phantasia, assuming you know japanese.

looks like I should probably stick to the PSX port with a patch. I can't speak Japanese so no point in getting Narikiri Dungeon X nor Full Voice Edition since that one isn't even fully translated.

If you want to play the most complete versions for the PSP in English that bad, you could download the iOS localization. Or just wait for Absolute Zero to finish their patch someday.

I don't have any iOS devices and I heard that port was pretty terrible with DRM-type saving and butchered fighting system and menus. wouldn't the translated PSX port be best?

Just as a note:
  • SNES Version:
    • PROS:
      • The original version of the game
      • Has an excellent fan translation
      • High difficulty, for those who want a challenge
      • Smooth transitions between the field and battle screens
    • CONS:
      • Never released in English-speaking countries
      • High difficulty, for those who don't want a challenge
      • High enemy encounter rate
      • Some animations are off to some degree
      • Single-player only
      • No manual control mode
  • PS1 Version:
    • PROS:
      • Has an excellent fan translation
      • FMV movies included
      • Improved summons, spells, and animations
      • New bosses, sidequests, characters, etc.
      • More difficult bosses
      • Beefed up playable characters
    • CONS:
      • Never released in English-speaking countries
      • Some animations are off to some degree
      • Some weapons are nerfed
      • Some playable characters are nerfed
      • Slowdown in places where many sprites are on screen
  • GBA Version:
    • PROS:
      • Released in English-speaking countries
      • Has a retranslation patch
      • Uses the PS1 version's sprites
      • Includes PS1 version's extras
    • CONS:
      • Official English translation is horrible
      • Some animations are off to a major degree
      • Playable characters nerfed in the PS1 version are nerfed even further
      • Some weapons are nerfed
      • Runs at around 10-15FPS while the PS1 and SNES versions ran at 60
      • Awful music, sounds, and voices
      • Most of PS1 sidequests removed
      • Washed-out colors
      • Massive slowdown in battle
Sorry, but I don't know enough about the PSP versions to be able to make a pros and cons list for them for this post. However, considering they're remakes, I would have to say go for one of these. If I had to choose one for myself, though, I'd choose Tales of Phantasia X, but only if there were a full English translation for it.

nice extensive list. thanks a lot. gonna be going for the SNES version I guess, since I'm up for a "hard mode" type experience, having played the GBA version.

IMO the snes version was the best. why? because it wasn't censored

The "F**ks like a tiger" line was added by the DeJap fan-translators.
That said, they only made it obvious what was implicit in all other versions, including the original Japanese versions, both of the PS1 fan-translations and yes, even the Nintendo-made GBA localization kept the meaning of that scene intact. Didn't check the iOS version.

SNES
(DeJap fan-translation)

PS1
(Absolute Zero fan-translation, 2007)

PS1
(Phantasian Productions fan-translation, 2012)

GBA
(Nintendo, official localization, 2005)

iOS
(Namco, official localization)
No one put a video for that version... yet?
