Hey guys,

So i just bought an old 3DS from someone and it runs on Version 4.1.0-4E
I also want to buy a Gateway and use my R4 SDHC White.

I'm totally new to the 3DS world and want to know which version i should upgrade to so i can have the best features and optimal compatibility.

P.S: Any tips as to where i should start would be awesome.

P.S.S: I also got an R4 SDHC White card with my 3DS, which doesn't work, i'll post a different thread about that one. check it out from my profile. if you guys could also help me with that one that would be awesome!

Thx,

Muzo

If you plan to play backups (which i think is your main purpose), just leave Gateway on its virtual shelf and install ARM9LoaderHax + Luma3DS since is completely free and you won't have trouble installing it since you are on an old firmware.
Simply follow this guide: https://plailect.github.io/Guide/get-started
As for your R4, once you finish setting up everything, try to install the whitelist for DS Flashcarts, that might re-enable the usage of your R4

gateway is redundant this day and age this guide is the answer

but for the sake of it lets answer the questions

A. 9.0

luma3ds (a cfw covered in the guide i linked at the top) will allow your old flashcard to work and if it does not there is always . . .
R4 Stage2 TWL Flashcart Launcher(and perhaps other cards soon™)....

Oh wow thanks for the quick reply!

1 question though, do i need a bigger SD card (like 32 gb?) for installing games on it? or does it go via some other cartridge?

To clarify, my question is. Where does the games get installed. I'm guessing to the SD card at the bottom left?

It depends on how many games you want to install. 4GB is enough for 1-3 Games and 32GB is enough for 15-25 games

So the games does get installed on your SD located at the bottom left instead of the cartridge like the R4?

Does that mean that the CFW also gets installed on the SD card?

If not, what's the capacity of the 3DS?

Yes, all games are installed on the sd card and you can launch them from homemenu.

My concern is that i want to install arm9loaderhax and stuff (the guide you guys send me) but does it get installed on that SD card?
I have a 2GB SD card right now from Toshiba, if the games go to that card ill need a 32 GB. but if i install a CFW right now on the 2GB, do i need to install it again on the 32GB? or can i just switch in between.

<1GB is used for the minNAND backup. If you want to upgrade, you can just drag and drop the content from the 2GB SDCard to the new one, not much of an issue.

2GB is barely enough to hack your 3DS. Just like wiimer said, you can just copy the files from your 2GB SD to another one, no need to reinstall stuff.

Hey guys,

Thanks to your help i've installed everything in that guide successfully without any errors. My only concern is that at the "update your 3DS (yes it's safe)"-part it went to version 11.2. shouldnt it be 9.2?

Also, how do i play DS and 3DS games? any guides or links as how to homebrew works/does etc?

Yep totally safe. 9.2 was for before the fact of A9LH. As for 3ds games download this and install the cia with FBI (drag the cia anywhere on the SD card) https://github.com/Cruel/freeShop/releases . Then in settings scan the qr code from http://lmgtfy.com/?q=that+3ds+titlekey+site first result! As for DS games, install the cia in this thread through FBI and hope it allows your flashcard to work. If that doesn't work try looking if your card is compatible in this thread and install the cia for it. If none of those 2 options work you may be out of luck with DS games unless you want to actually buy them :P . Although you could get a dirt cheap original 9 dollar R4 from GBATemp's sponsor with free shipping!

Had no idea why i needed a QR code when i read your comment but as soon as i clicked on the link (QR+*looks at game names*+*Eshop* PROCESSING*Lightbulb*AHA!) i knew exactly how it worked. XD

but just 1 question though, just to be sure. when i go to eshop on homebrew. im connected to the internet. isnt it risky to click on anything? (i've been cautious till now i didnt tap on anything yet) can i just open games even tou my balance is 0? How does it work?

you dont go to the eshop. you go to the freeshop and then your eshop balance is pointless

Sorry for bothering you guys so much but, there must be a beginners guide as how to homebrew and such work right?

I mean i have many (probably simple to you) questions XD

Like where do i play on the original Eshop on my start page. or do i use homebrew version? there are multiple homebrew shops.

and how does installing games work exactly, like regular DS and 3DS.

Is it safe to be connected to the internet all the time? i've read that some people got banned playing Pokemon Sun&Moon.

If there is some sort of website or forum post that'd be awesome.
or do i just need to keep bothering people with stupid questions XD
