I've been looking at wii chips for a while now and I've kinda decided that I would like to just get a programmer (I don't think I could build one so I'll just buy the one off ebay i guess). But what I need is like a beginners guide or something to all the different kind of chips that you can buy and which one is better. I know the ATmega or however it's spelled is the best but I don't know what that is or how i would go about getting one or programming it.

I'm not a total newb to modding though, I modded my xbox about two years ago by myself and it turned out well so i thought i'd do the same here.

thanks for any help
brian

well now that i've thought about it it would be a heck of a lot easier to just buy the wiinja deluxe. if there comes a time when the open source mods become that much better than i can just get one of those i guess.

unless there is something i am missing about the wiinja deluxe

Dosnt winnja deluxe require you to patch the .iso of different region games to make them work?

Building a programmer is really, really simple.

I had a bit of a headache with it, but got there after a few tries and it works fine.

I'll see if I can post a guidey type thing for ya.

Wiinja Deluxe has on the fly region patching and audiofix, it's the only modchip with both, open source or otherwise.

OP: if you want to get your hands dirty go through the process of making a programmer. It won't cost you all that much except in time, and the learning process should make you feel more comfortable about installing the finished product in your Wii. Otherwise, there's nothing wrong with going with Wiinja Deluxe, it's the best commercially available modchip in my opinion.

Do any of the open chips have audiofix yet?

No, but the .hex for Wiinja v2 has been leaked to the public, so you can program that to the same kind of chip (PIC12F629) as WiiFree or yaosm. Wiinja v2 doesn't have on the fly region patching, but does have audiofix from what I understand. Patching a Wii ISO for region purposes is easier and faster than patching an audiofix needing Gamecube game.
