Ive never understood the need of a timeline for the legend of zelda. For me the Legend of Zelda is just that a "Legend".
So its the same story, boy is lineal ancestor of a hero, girl gets kidnapped, he goes to save her. The reason why the games changes is because as the legend gets past down from generation to generation and as its being told by different people, subtle details and changes are made to suit the storyteller. Simple as that.
The old night cap could go away. I envisioned a modern Zelda where a teenage link sporting a green hoodie is in class or something and a nearby volcano erupts sending monster flowing out. Link having been told of his ancestry goes to the roof of his school ala megaman 2 and it pans out into a modern world with historic sites and a volcano way off into the horizon. But its something i thought of when gamecube was out and Final Fantasy 15 kinda took that concept already now and the Zelda Wiiu demo really dejavu it to me.
