Bad Apple for the Nintendo DS

Well, it was about time. It seemed like there was no real Bad Apple rom for the Nintendo DS yet, so I decided to make one.

It runs at 60fps and with 48 kHz stereo audio. I'm using a simple video codec I created just for this video. It simply encodes each frame into a character bg for the ds, merging tiles that are the same into one. Each frame is then LZ77 compressed to reduce the size of the remaining data by about 50%.

Download here if you wanna try for yourself: https://mega.nz/#!dgkmhSiL!5jLs7cIPuYO9R2oXaP8gGepAl9KeAEQ4heBsMl19Lsc

The source of both the player and the encoder can be found here: https://mega.nz/#!xhNQlRqZ!Iez6e-diTYIKyIrjLfXZD2fWJrps0_TPAMWxADaPmak

There's crazier ones out there:

Bonus points for having semi-decent quality audio and actually producing the lyrics instead of bit-crunching it.

IMO the C64, ZX Spectrum versions sound really good. There's a LSDJ version for gameboy too, and it kicks ass.

Agreed to some extent. The fact that they run at all is impressive and no doubt thanks to some ingenious methods of cutting corners when it comes to hardware limits. That being said, I personally find it special when the older system/machine in question is not only capable of running the audio with the lyrics intact but also syncing it together with the video. Exceptions of course being when the said system doesn't have sound output in the first place, like these two:

Has been done!
Apparently it was made by the same person who made the Atari 2600 version.

Thank you! Now I can have when I need to crunch some numbers, and play doom :-)

Wait, new Samsung washing machine has display, OMG

CPU wise, running something like this on a C64 is not a problem, it is "powerful" enough to be able to have the display updating and animating at a steady rate. The main hurdle and obstacle is cramming the whole thing into a 170k disk side and streaming it from the awfully slow floppy while doing all this

Curious as to what the file sizes are to the other bad apple examples on other hardware

I got the jist of that in the video. Seems like a self-imposed challenge which is admirable. Here's another one:

Happens at 3:24.

Not quite sure about all of them, but this one for DS was over 100MB.
And the awesome version for SEGA Megadrive is some 8MB.
I think the NES and ATARI2600 versions are 512KB.
Not sure about the others.

C64 has to be less than 300k
It's 170kb or less I suppose, that's what the creator stated above.
That is what one can fit on a SS disk 5.25" on C64.

PS: The C64 version is almost perfect, but I will still nitpick about lack of synch, if only the apple was caught in synch with the music.
(perhaps @thealgorithm fixed that in other version?)

Infact, I did not even know it had to be synced when I created it.. :-) 170k was quite a limitation. (With 400k or so, I believe it would appear non-lossless - as far as silhoettes in 320x200 anyhow) using non clustered VQ and less lifetime for the character definitions). Quality of the encoder I created at the time was also very suboptimal. (Improved considerably since then) but no remake planned.. too many badapples around :-)

Yea, this one is quite heavy. But as I said, I did not put much effort in making it smaller. It should be possible to come up with some other algorithm that compresses much better.

Nice to see something like this run smooth on an old DS...

You know what would be cooler? If someone got this video to play on a Macintosh SE. That thing runs just under 8mhz or so. Monochrome display so something like this would fit right in on that screen. :P

Someone made a rudimentary video player for it but the software was long lost. Video players of it's day required color quick draw which wasn't a thing until the Macintosh SE/30. :P

Never could track down that video player that supposedly was made to work on these old Macs.... :(
