Atmosphère's reboot to payload function gets improved

37918415.png

If you've been keeping up with Atmosphère's development then you probably know its latest stable version has introduced a feature to reboot from Atmosphère into a RCM payload without using a payload injector. You might also remember that the same feature only worked if the console encountered a fatal error or if it was triggered by a homebrew application, as rebooting via the power menu would still send you to either your OFW or RCM depending if you had AutoRCM enabled or not.

Well, @SciresM had already said back then that this behavior could be changed in the future and it's indeed now possible to do so!
This new feature is also customizable: you can choose whether to reboot to your own payload, RCM or leave the power menu's reboot function untouched. It should be stressed that the console will not autoboot into CFW after it gets shut down and, of course, you can only make use of this function if you're already running Atmosphère. So like last time, while it's nice that the need to keep a RCM injector with you at all times gets smaller with each commit, you shouldn't say goodbye to your dongles and jigs just yet as this isn't a substitute for a proper warmboot exploit.

You can see a video of the new feature in action in the following Tweet:

There are no official stable releases including it at the time of writing, however the commits have been pushed to Atmosphère's GitHub repo so you can clone and compile your own unstable version if you wish to do so (link in the source down below).

While this isn't the keyless 7.0.0 update some users have been waiting for, it's been said in the same Tweet that the non-byok update is still being worked on and is expected to be released soon.

Haha lol. Ok then. I am still on 8.2.0 and never really looked into it. Just thought that it would be a great feature. And it already exists.
You should really use it. Kosmos 11.9 includes reboot_to_payload.nro which reboots you into Hekate without intentionally crashing your console. It's really good if you take your SD card out a lot, since Hekate supports SD card hotswapping.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

it has been implemented in 0.8.1 , dude.
No. 0.8.1 only supported rebooting into RCM, so you still need an injector. 0.8.3 introduced rebooting directly into a payload.

I have a modchip, so I don't really care. But now I don't have to remember to hold volume up on reboot. Although I have to press the volume button. So I will forget anyways.

You need to hold Vol- only to enter Hekate if you're using autoboot. If you just want to get straight into CFW or don't use autoboot, you just have to do whatever you have to with a modchip. Oh, also get yourself a nice bootlogo here. Not only it looks cool, it also reminds you that you can hold Vol- to get into Hekate.

If it doesn't work from shutdown, why might I want this over AutoRCM?
So that you can reboot to CFW again for example after applying a theme or crash or (probably the most useful case) reboot back to CFW after removing and reinserting SD card (so you no longer have to push payload again when you just wanted to switch few files on SD).

RattletraPM is on a roll, and it looks really nice and a welcoming edition to Atmosphere :)
If GaryOPA is so good why isn't there a GaryOPA 2? :P

Jokes aside, I'll take this opportunity to be extra clear: I'm not endorsed nor affiliated to any project in particular. I just report stuff. I'm not perfect, if there are any fallacies in what I write, feel free to point it out and and I'll correct myself. Also if there's anything you'd like me to write about, feel free to send it my way. Again, my post aren't exclusive to anything in particular and I'm always open to suggestions! ;)

It's very conveniant for people that did not buy a USB-C payload injector.
Let's say you are and a car trip, you are playing around with retroarch and the console crashes.
Normally you would need a PC to get back into CFW. But this allows you to get back without that.

Also restarting the console into a payload is really conveniant. Restart into hekate to do stuff of do boot something special

Yes, but if you shutdown or crash (that should get implemented tho), you will boo through stock bootloader thus burn fuses.
hold on - you burn fuses when you are running a firmware higher than your fuse count and crash rebooting to OFW right? If your Switch crashes and you are running a firmware that matches your fuse count nothing will happen or am I wrong? Cheers for your time!

It will burn fuses to match your current firmware. You can still use it, although downgrading will be painful. If you have more burnt fuses than expected, OFW refuses to boot. You can still use CFW, though.

If you have FW which matches your fuses, nothing will happen. If you have autorcm, nothing ill happen. If you reboot to a payload, nothing will happen (unless the payload does not support fuse bypass). If you reboot normally and have higher FW then your fuses and don't have autorcm, you burn fuses.

Amazing. If all CFWs would implement that, I could reboot to ArgonNX or hekate anytime to switch (<- lol) between all custom firmwares easily.

You can replace reboot_payload.bin or whatever it was called with any payload. AMS will just chainload that.

Unfortunately you can only do this once (if not hekate) and only AMS supports it indefinitely (launching it with ReiNX won't work).
SciresM has done it again! I wonder when he will stop.

Any reference to Hekate supporting SD hotswap? Googling just leads back to this thread. I know Hekate supports hotswap when doing a NAND backup, but it also makes clear when to do this.

The hekate thread actually says to reboot to RCM if you want to remove the SD card.
