Honestly you might get more speed and space out of buying a flash drive for the same price. Look at the options available to you.

Get one with an external power supply and you'll be fine. As long as it works with your HDD, and it has external power, and you format it to the proper format, it'll work fine with the raspberry pi 3 (not to run the OS, but you probably already know that).

Is the data connector a really long 40 pin array or a short L-Shaped port? That will determine which enclosure or USB cable you can get.
