I bought a mayflash wii to HDMI converter because my TV only has HDMI inputs. It's working fine for Wii games, but when I try to play GameCube games the image always looks stretched out. I'm assuming this is because the converter stretches the resolution but I'm not sure. I tried recuding the video width in Nintendont when I can't reduce it enough to make games look right. The only way is changing the aspect ratio on the TV settings every time I play a GC game which is a pain. Is there a solution to this? And am I correct in assuming the problem is caused by the wii2hdmi converter?

Unfortunately no, this isn't a bug caused by the converter.

Wii outputs an analog 480p signal. For our purposes, think about it as the signal essentially doesn't include an aspect ratio. The TV receiving it decides what to do with that 480p, display it as 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio.

So you have a few options.

Your status quo is your Wii is outputting 16:9 and your TV is expecting 16:9, Wii games are built for that and look fine, GC games look stretched.

You can configure your Wii to output 4:3 and your TV to pillar box (black bars on the sides) the results. This is closest to original GC output.

You can configure your Wii to output 16:9 and patch GC games with force widescreen (the USB loaders can do this on a per-game basis) Doesn't work for everything/sometimes has wonky results. This is closest to what you probably have in mind.

There's no way to do it automatically, where you've got pillar boxed GC games and full screen widescreen Wii games on vanilla Wii hardware.
